I'm considering the Army, but worried about basic training. Any tips out there from people that have gone through it? I'm worried about that the fact that I just turned 30 and most everyone else is like 18. I scored a 74 on the ASVAB and my line scores are all atleast a 115. Is this good or should I concider something else?

Army Basic Training is not bad when you counter-act the psycological indignation with commen sense.

When drill seargents yell and scream at you, calling you maggot and other names, keep in perspective that they do not really mean you any ill will. In fact, they WANT you to succeed. However, they must test your physical AND mental endurance under pressure situations to make sure you have "the right stuff"!

I thought my drill seargent hated, despised, and loathed everyone, but for those that completed the training and graduated, he came around shaking our hands, telling us how proud he was of our accomplishment, and was honored to train us. You can't take things personally, no matter how bad it seems.

You will be tested for physical endurance as well. My advice is to get fit before you go in, practicing the basics such as push-ups, sit-ups, and running 2-3 miles at a moderate pace. You DON'T want to be the one that falls out of formation on a run as those always gets picked on! But even if you do fall out, don't give up! Keep a pace and try to keep up and you'll probably do fine!

The goal to surviving Basic Training is to be a nobody. I had a buddy that, when we graduated basic, was asked by the drill sergeant, "Are you in my unit?" My buddy was successful. Remember that it is never personal. The DI's job is to erase the individual, build a team player, then reinstall the individual. When things are at their worst, remember this saying which I give you. "This too, shall pass." I was given this when I was in basic and guess what, that was 21 years ago. It passed.

I recommend getting fit before you get there. Navy boot was hard enough but I'm sure Army boot is more physical.

You'll be marching and running in fatigues, lots of calisthenics.

Good luck!

Just make a good first impression. The first few days, the drill sergeants will pick out a few 'projects' and you don't want to be one of those!

Basic is no problem. Just do what you are told and get used to sore muscles. 40 year olds can go through.
I enjoyed it.

I have heard it is hard but I think you would just have to go through it. Come on, You see other girls in there and doing what you wanna do. Go for it! If I was in shape and atheletic as what I use to be then I would go in there.
