I had the dog in my room with me. He is usually pretty calm and happy. He started barking really agressively towards the ceiling in my room and then looking behind him, like if something was flying around in the room. Before this happened I noticed he was rolling around and rubbing himself with his paws like if something or someone was touching him and he didn't want to be touched. As you can imagine this started freaking me out. So I put him back where he was before. Is there any practical or reasonable explanation for this.

Could have been a little bug or something flying around and landing on him.

Some times dogs see things a human can 't see. My dog use to sit at the bottom of the stairs and bark as he was looking up the stairs. Some times even growl. Talking about freaking out. That is just like dogs can feel storms before you know they are coming. We all can learn from man best friend, if we learn to read them.

My birds do this all the time, there is a spirit in my house, I think, that animals do see them. I used to have an inside dog, and he used to sit in the middle of the kitchen wagging his tail, for no reason, then he would like "make his rounds" into every room, like he was looking for something or someone. Weird but dogs just like small children do have a sixth sense.

It could have been paranormal activity, alright. That is possible, but have you considered the fact that maybe the weather was making the dog flip out? sometimes before storms, animals act weird. Honestly, I think it could have been many different things.
