Hi Vijaya.
Excel is a program in MS Excel that helps you to perform all the mathematical functions without wasting much time and effort. Actually it has stored formulae for additions, subtraction, average, etc.. If you want to use it, just select the numerical expressions plus one cell below it and choose an operation from the Sigma menu and the rest of the calculation is done automatically.

The sign - Sigma in Excel means - the sum total of all the values fed in the particular coloumn. By pressing Sigma, you save the effort of manual calculation of the values that have been fed in.

The Greek letter sigma is scientific/mathematical lingo for "sum." That's true pretty much everywhere, not just in Excel.
