In-country Viet Nam vet and retired Navy here. I have never had night mares about Viet Nam, in fact I don't ever remember dreaming about my time there, but I do still have dreams of being back in the Navy (retired in '85). I guess it is caused a lot because I work with foreign navies and work near a Navy shipyard and see sailors and ships a lot.
A friend from my school days did 2 and a part of a 3rd tour in Viet Nam until his helo was hit. He had no problems until he joined the VFW and got around all those old war horses. He left Viet Nam in 1969 and until the early 80's he had no problems. When he became a VFW member, he started drinking heavy and thrashing in his sleep. It got so bad his wife slept in the guest room many nights. I urged her to get him to get out of the VFW. However, he was post commander for 11 or 12 years. He was in Salt Lake City at a VFW convention a couple of years ago and died in his sleep. He was 57, had a bronze star, several air medals and many others awards.

Well I can't speak from personal experience, but the 3 Vietnam vets I know personally haven't had nightmares in a long time. It was something that some of them had a problem with when they first got home, but it just sort went away with time.

I was diagnosed with severe PTSD before the VA even recognized it as compensable. They have a drug called Trazadone which seems to target the brain patterns caused by PTSD. It does well on the nightmares while allowing you the wet dreams.
