The Christian Religion only says that people were set up to be over the plants and animals it does not state that we are the only reason for existence. the book Ecclesiastes actually has a few passages that suggest to people that they are not all that.

christianity teaches the concept of stewardship for the environment. humans are the reason for existence but without the animals and plants, there would be no humans...think about it. what would you eat? where would you live? how would you go about your daily life without animals and plants (or their byproducts)?...
i am buddhist (philosophically moreso than religiously) which goes beyond the concept of stewardship. not only do we take care of the earth because we rely on it for so much, but we also believe that all living things (plants and animals included) have an innate soul and therefore deserve respect for that sole reason.

I've never read anything about humans being the only reason for existence. I don't even know what that means.
But the biggest mistake in the bible was giving man dominion over the animals. And telling the humans to go forth and multiply. We did it folks! We went forth. We multiplied. Mission accomplished! You can stop now!
