This has only happened twice that I can recall. I will be laying down to go to sleep and it will be as I am dozing off, I will feel very heavy pressure in my ears and hear very low humming, buzzing type noise. Kinda like when there is no sound at all but the sound of silence is loud? But its much louder. Make sense? Probably not. Anyway, while this is happening, it also seems to paralyze me. I am awake but I can't open my eyes or move, and when I finally am able to move it stops. Its so strange. And no I don't do drugs or am not on any medications.

Wow I didn't realize that it was as common as this. Only two people but thats more than I expected! And it is a feeling of being trapped or paralyzed and it is kinda scary! Maybe its brought on by extreme exhaustion or something?

Thanks for the link but I don't think its a night terror b/c its shortly after I've laid down and I haven't even fallen completely asleep yet and when I come out of it I'm not disoriented.

It's actually really really common. It's called Sleep Paralysis, if I spelt that right. ;) Try googling it, there's so much information on it. It's your body's defense mechanism, so don't worry! It's completely normal.

Yeah OK I thought I was the only one that had ever experienced that! It usually happens to me when I'm fairly tired. It's kind of scary in a weird sorta' way. I feel like I'm almost asleep but I'm not. The not being able to move part I hate. Any way I don't know what causes it but sometimes it gets a lot weirder than I can really describe. Well OK I often fell a presence in the room. I don't see any one but it feels as if some one is there...standing over me and I hear very weird noises and I have a strange sensation through out my body. I gotta' tell ya' I'm scared to and I have some pretty scary thoughts. Man it's just weird to know that other people know about this and have experienced it.

I've had quite the same thing you are telling about. It happened five or six times to me. Although I have some medical education myself, I'm not sure what it is exactly, but that thing occured to me during a very busy times, when I was working really long shifts in the Intensive Care Unit. I did not consult any doctors or anything, because it all stopped and have not troubled me for about 5 years now. I would think it has something to do with brain blood flow, so, if it keeps troubling you, I would suggest that you contact a neurologist.

I don't know why this happens....but just wanted you to know it has happened to me before. I know I am awake and I try to open my eyes or talk and nothing happens. It is soo bizarre. And I do not take any drugs or medication either. It is scary. I feel trapped and paralyzed!!!

Where I'm from we call it "The Old Hag." It's sleep paralysis that sometimes comes with hallucinations. It's super common but very scary!
