Hello, my husband and I are looking into buying a new puppy, but we are unsure of what breed to buy. We like chows, chihuahuas, puggles, etc. But I was just wondering if anyone could give me some ideas of more breeds, that are GOOD with kids, not too hyper, don't shed too much, and are not too big because we have an apartment. Thank you for your time and answers!!

I would definitely do some research on breeds before you buy a dog. Check this website to see if it will help. It looks like you can read about each breed as well as take a quiz to see what type best fits you.

In my experience, the dog breeds which are the least likely to develop human aggression issues are the Pug, Beagle, English Bulldog, and Boston Terrier. I haven't really seen an example of any of those breeds that I would say had a serious aggression issue, though I have met more than a few nervous Beagles. Well-bred Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Pit Bulls, and Greyhounds would be right up there as well. On the other hand are the breeds which are most likely to be aggressive. I have never had a pleasant experience with a Yorkie. In fact, of the 50 or so Yorkies that I have encountered, I would say all 50 had some sort of aggression issue. Chow Chows, Akitas, and Chihuahuas are right up there as well. But, I would say that the most aggressive dog breeds are the various breeds of Terrier from Scotland, the Scottish Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, and Skye Terrier. Scotties and Westies in particular are very bitey dogs.

Shih tzus are small friendly dogs that do not shed and are hypo-allergenic as well. They have "hair" instead of "fur". They are good with children, especially when raised with children. I would recommend keeping their hair in a "puppy cut" which basically means short, as their hair will grow long and then requires a LOT of brushing.

Also, Chows are not good with kids. So I would especially stay away from that breed. Chihuahuas can be very hyper and puggles can be poorly bred (as they are just a mix between two other breeds) and can have health problems because of that.

I've owned English Cocker Spaniels for the past 29 years, they do shed but less than an American Cocker. They are very good with children. Active dogs that can live in an apartment.

I would advice against a large or giant breed as little children can get hurt unintentionally.

Visit the AKC website www.akc.org and get the details on all the breeds.

You should think about adopting one from a shelter. There are a lot of advantages to a shelter puppy vs. a pure breed. 1. Mix breed dogs tend to be healthier in the long run. Pure breeds are more open to diseases and things such as hip dyspasia (SP?) 2. Unless you are going to breed your dog you should have them spayed anyways. 3. MUCH CHEAPER!! Depends on where you live adoption fees range from 30-100 dollars but cover spay/neuter and shots. A pure bread puppy will cost over 500 dollars usually and then about 150-200 for spaying.neuter and alot for puppy's first 3 sets of shots. 4. Shelter dogs are usually coming with 30 free pet insurance to cover anyones fear they are getting a sick puppy. 5. Last but not least you will be giving a puppy that truely needs and will truely appreciate a good new home. I have 2 shelter dogs and a stray and they are MUCH more lovig than the pure bred labs we had when I was growing up. Good luck with your choice.

Well i would not suggest a chow! They are not good with children at all and then there is all that fur.
A pug is great and they like kids. Chici are ok but a bit high strung and tend to bark alot and nip!
Bull gos are great fun and are smaller. Lots of smaller breeds and some dont even shed!

You might want to look into a Boton Terrier (can be hyper, but they are great with kids and kids can wear them out with tons of play) or even a Cavilier Spaniel ( more relaxed of the spaniels but very loving and good for families)

Both of these breed are suiteable for apartment life style, known for their kind and gentle temperments, and easy to train and have a high drive to please their owners.

Check out

www.akc.org for some more ideas.

Also if you choose to buy a purebred dog make sure you get a puppy from a reputable breeder with a solid health guarentee. Make sure mom and dad of the litter are of sound health and temperment.

Another idea is to check out breed specific rescues if your looking for a specific breed. You can also check out the local animal shelters in your area.

Good luck

Dogs are good with kids because the dogs and the children are trained to deal with each other! That being said, smaller dogs tend to be a bit nippier and often more fragile to children's rough hands and play. I'd suggest a standard poodle, and they don't shed, are a good size, are intelligent and sweet. Check out the AKC for breed standards, or dog clubs for more info. Often breed rescue sites have excellent descriptions of the breed's typical behaviour, etc. to inform people wanting to adopt them. Good luck!

I agree with everyone... stay away from chows for the maintenance, your smaller breeds that are good with kids and apts are shelties, golden retriever ( medium), beagle, and the idea of a shelter is great. You can take your kids to be involved in the process of picking a dog. Good luck on your search!

I am looking to purchase a dog too. Since i have been looking i have been researching various dog breeds. The best one that i came up with was the german schnauzer. They are very protective, they do not shed, and they do not carry the doggy odor. They are also very loyal dogs but they must be socialized very well.
You can get those in different sizes but they can be expensive.
