there are no hard and fast physical manifestions, young or old. Each person is unique in going thru a unique process.
I've seen young people suddenly drop dead from stroke, no previous symptoms whatever, they looked fine. And then I have seen older folks looking like they were on death's doorstep, live and look that way for literally years. As a nurse, I have learned to listen to the person, they can usually tell you if they are near death.

Many elderly people have an increased rate of hospitalizations in the year before their death, but I have not noticed any difference in these health crisis that show which one would be the one to result in death.
Again, over the course of the previous year, there is frequently weight loss. But not necessarily in the weeks before.

I knew when my grandmother started dying. She was very quite and she studied every ornament on her Christmas tree and every photo and nick-nack around the house.
Much closer to her death, she claimed to see those who'd died before her. The day before her death, she went a little nuts. She demanded that we open all the windows and doors, so Jesus could come in. :P
