I'm pretty good at poker, but I have trouble reading people. What are some of the signs that tell if a person is bluffing or not. I know a few such as sweating, hand gestures, face gestures, but I cannot tell whether these signs mean that they are bluffing, have something alright, something good, or something unbeatable. What are the signs and what category do they usually fall under.

If you have not yet read Mike Caro's "Book of Poker Tells" I suggest you get it. Caro is considered one of the leading authorities on spotting poker tells.

If you will go light on the bets for the first 4 or 5 hands and watch the other players reactions when they have a good or bad hand, you can tell, sometimes. After all, pocker "is" a game of chance. I have a friend that has a pocker face from h*ll. I don't care what he has, you can't tell any difference in his face, actions, or gestures. I told him on more than one occation that he should go pro and he never listened. He said he just liked being able to play with friends and win a little money from time to time.

One way is to watch the time it takes for a player to bet. Also how much a player bets can be a tell. Another is if the board pairs and it goes through a check all around, that can be a tell. After you play a while, little subtle things start to pop out.

Believe it or not, you can actually read people if you play poker online. I came across a site that explains "tells" and how to use them online. Pretty interesting stuff. Just click on the source URL below and hit the "Tells" button. Pretty cool ..

While this will probably appear to be a flip answer - the old adage "Know Thyself" is probably your best advice here. The books can point the way and are useful but we are all human and all react in similar ways to stress, fear, excitement, etc. Understand how you react and you'll be able to see it in others so easily, you'll wonder how you ever missed it.

You have to read the books. Caro is the original Bible on reading people, but there is an amazing new book too. I suggest you get both and read them.

look them directly in the eye . pretend you are looking for a facial tick or something. then say to yourself, how did he play the last few hands to the river. pros can read you but you can't read anybody. and you don't play against pros...
