My bird has liver disease and the pet store recommended I get him Roudybush Formula AL Liver Care pellets. It's available through prescription only. I have an appointment with the avian vet next friday, and I will ask her about it then.

I've googled it and haven't found much about it. Has anyone had experience with it or heard anything about this? Please let me know.

Thanks.

When the liver is diseased, it cannot detox the body well of toxins. Proteins normally break down into amino acids and uric acid and ammonia. With a diseased liver, the liver cannot take care of the by products of protein metabolism, so uric acid builds up in the joints resulting in gouty arthritis, ammonia is toxic and poisons the brain and other tissues. Diets for these birds, are lower in protein to help not overtax the impaired liver. There is no cure even though livers can technically regenerate, but usually the damage is enough to prevent this occurrence. Most birds that develop fatty liver disease tend to be less active than those in the wild and have higher seed diets that are high in fat. May things go well.http://www.holisticbirds.com/Hbn02/spring02/pages/fld1.htm This is a good article on the disease with more detail. Have a great year

Wow sister, you hit it right on the head... I was just chatting with someone about this. We can only hope there is someone as caring and compassionate as us caregivers. We are there for each other, moral support is so important. I am here for anyone who is in that situation because I know firsthand how it is. My mom died in 2006 and I took care of her in her home for 9 years with the help of my own husband and children...it does take a toll on a person and you need lots of support. So it anyone is in the caregiver situation and needs someone to talk to, I'm here.

I haven't used the liver care ones, but I feed Roudybush to my birds every day.
