Pop into your local Salvation Army and explain as they do a huge amount of work in that area. It may be your Dad does not want to be found so be prepared for that just in case. You can also have a look at Census returns to see if he is on one b ut that will be a massive job. Seventeen years is not too long to trace someone so go for it and good luck and hope it works out for you both.

Well if you have a name that's a start try doing an Internet search for the area that you believe is lives if you have any leads follow up with a phone call if you can or write a letter. But wow 17 years did you mom say why she left if he was abusive to her I say let it go but if not then why has he not contacted you did you mom keep you from him. If you are 18 then I think it is time to set your mom down and ask her to tell you the truth about everything. You are old enough o understand good or bad. She had to have a good reason for leaving you would think.

write to the DSS, when youre 18 the info is availabe by law... she cant stop you finding your dad. also you can place an advert in the local paper, and most newspapers will run an article, human interest is far nicer than blood and snot...
oh, they wont give you his details, but htey will act as a go-between... the samaritans also do this service.

There is a website called 1stlocate and charge i think £7.50 to do a detailed search, once you do this you get addresses for everyone by this name, then you go onto the phonebook online, find the number that goes to the address and call them, its worth a try.

You poor thing, you have an absolute right to know who your father is and I think your mother is wrong.
Try friends/genes reunited/local paper/salvation army/www.b4u.co.uk.
Best of luck, hope you find him.
