you communicate through your body language tone of voice and emotional feelings dogs can understand facial expressions and body language. me and my dog had such a strong bond that i didn't have to give him many commands because we understood each other very well and i tell by his body language and the way he barked whether something was wrong or how he was feeling my dog was so smart that if he did something wrong when i came home he wouldn't greet me at the door because he knew he would get into trouble so he would just stay in his room. even if i called him repeatly.

In a word "consistency".
It has been proven that dogs have the capacity to learn over 100 different words. What is important is to call an object by the same name and with the same tone of voice every time in order for the dog to understand. The dog in my avatar for instance knows the difference between "beer" and "Pepsi" and will go get the proper one out of the fridge every time (now if she would just learn to close the fridge when she is done)

You need to read book that tell you how to do it - the best thing I can say is that you just have to imagine that you were a dog and talk like he does that is how he will understand the basics and then you start to adapt it - I learn alot from Monty Roberts who talks like horses - I mean in actions, not littrally, you can apply the basics to dogs and it works!

In order to communicate with any animal you have to be willing to and seems you have that already. Watch the body language.. it tells a lot about what an animal is feeling. Have you seen The Dog whisperer??? wonderful show. Check him out for answers.

Look directly into their eyes ,talk, or command and reward for good things done. Also use hand motions ,you will find that dogs understand many, many things!!!!You will know, when he understands by his actions. It takes patients and repeated actions and verbalization and rewards for good behavior.Use 2 syllable commands or 1 syllable words so as not to confuse .There are many ways to reward like treats, back rubs, belly rubs.Never hit or yell at your dog.If you must reprimand use a can with a penny taped up in it and shake it and say"NO.NO" or a strong stream water gun and squirt into face and say "NO.NO"!!!!You will be surprised how much your Dog will understand Good luck!!!!!!!

I recommend reading "How to Talk to Your Dog" by Jean Craighead George. It tells you how to understand your dog and how to make your dog understand you with no confusion.
Here are some examples:
To make him feel good: Say his name often, reward him with treats and praise
To say hello: sniff toward his nose
To say goodbye: swish your hand downward and show your back (your hand replaces the tail you don't have)
Check out the book, it's really helpful.

Actions speak louder than words.
If you want to communicate love to them, give them hugs.
If you want to communicate you don't approve the naughty things they did, shout at them with an angry voice whilst pointing at the result of what they did.
I think you get the idea...
The universal body language is one in which we can all benefit from learning more about, and is applicable not only to dogs but to all other mammals too.
