Hey there. Great idea to get so start exercising if you haven't been doing so! Congratulations. But before you go off and buy a piece of equipment that will cost thousands of dollars, why not go to a local gym and try one out first? I don't know if you're located near a place with gyms, but if so, go by and see about a trial membership. Many gyms, especially the bigger name places like Gold's, will be happy to give you a trial membership in the hopes that you'll like the place and sign up. Go in and try the treadmills out to first see what you think! Additionally, a full gym membership may be cheaper as a good treadmill will likely cost you $2000 and up!
I would also suggest taking walks and jogs around the area you live. You may find being outside to be more enjoyable than being on a treadmill.
I for one am a fan of treadmills. If you decide you like one and want one for your home, there are many quality brands to choose from. Most treadmills today are very quiet, durable, and easy to use. And the good brands will have very good warranties. But don't buy something cheap - you'll get what you pay for.
As for the positives and negatives... Having a treadmill at home is great for bad weather, or getting a workout in while watching your favorite TV show at the same time. I enjoy jogging, and a treadmill is a nice way for me to change things up in my routine. I'll listen to music, watch TV, and play with all sorts of workout programs. Additionally, treadmills have more "give" than a road, so if you get into jogging, this will have less wear and tear on your joints than jogging on pavement. The downside is they typically take up a lot of room, and as I mentioned before, they can be expensive. I know some brands offer treadmills that fold up, but I don't know much about those and if they work very well.
My favorite brand is Life Fitness. Their web site is listed below. I like their T-5 series which is the home version of their units I've seen at gyms. It's very smooth, easy to use, and low impact. It is a bit pricey at $3500, but if you're serious about it, I think that would be a great investment. They also offer eliptical machines and other exercise equipment that you may find you like better than a treadmill.
In any case, basic activity like walking or jogging, be it on a treadmill or outside, will be a great boost to your fitness. Good luck to you!

good things-you can't always go outside b/c of the weather so having a treadmill will be a good alternative-walking is one of the easiest things you can do to be more active-
i have one and the noise gets louder as the speed increases, but i always listen to music or put in a movie and watch/listen to that so that I don't focus on the noise, but it's not really that loud to me-ummm..bad things would be that it's not too versatile.. i mean most of them have an incline but all you can do is walk-run on it. you may get bored with walking or running all the time and need something else to do, and it mostly works your lower half like the legs, thighs, calves, etc. so you may want to add some other type of cardio like a workout video or something for more variety

Most treadmills I have been on or seen in the store are quiet. It is a good way to get some exercise if you have the space for a treadmill.

Hello,
Most treadmills are surprisingly quiet, now-a-days. There are a lot of factors to consider (tread width, speed, motor size, etc...). See the link below for some buying tips and guidance. Best of luck!

Buy an elliptical instead. You get a better work out and it doesn't impact your knees as much.
