My best friend suffers the same. She tried to handle it on her own and ended up in Mendota Mental Health Institute - twice. Both times for suicide attempts because of her fear and sense of hopelessness of not being able to control her issues herself. The last time was by overdose and it messed up her mind permanently. There is no medical reason she is alive-she should be dead.
She got medical treatment and is on medication. She was diagnosed with Severe Social Anxiety Disorder. It took about 6 months to get the right kind of medicine and dose that works for her. She also changed her diet and some bad habits. Now she is so much better. She can drive a car without fear, go for a walk without anxiety attacks and even shop in a store. There are still instances that are rough for her - like large crowds and any loud yelling/shouting. But she is getting stronger and more sure of herself as time goes on. It has been 3 years since the last Mendota episode and she is doing better every day at handling this disease. She has very few "attacks" now and can usually control them on her own.
My advice - don't try to control it on your own. Seek medical attention and don't give up. Establish a support network that is there ANYTIME they are needed - night or day. The fact that you recognize signs of the disease is awesome. We learned that most do not until it is to late. Also remember - IT IS A DISEASE!! You are not nuts and it is not your fault - you did nothing wrong. It is because of a chemical imbalance in your body that these symptoms occur. We found out diet, medication, sleep patterns and basic habits can all affect the ability of a person to function "normal-without anxiety attacks". Of course, I don't know what "normal" is in this world anymore.
God bless.

I'm NOT an expert but I suffer from a similar condition and it sounds like social anxiety to me. There are many websites online that explain the condition (which unfournatley I can't think of off the top of my head) so it will make it more clear to you, but more importantly there is help available to lessen your problem. A doctor can put you on a low dosage of medication to make your problem manageable and a therapist can teach you exercises to help you deal with the anxiety. This can be crippling and affect your entire life. Please don't let it consume you and get some help. Good luck!

dude your on the same road as me :) Ive put up with it for all my life, i was pretty much born with it. Horrible feeling!! i can say social anxiety is the worse their is as social life is basically life isnt it lol ans its gotta be put to the max i got prescriptions, didnt really help me, helped me a bit but like.. .it was still their, the thing is it isnt really to do with mental health even your doctor may say otherwise, from my experience its just the way your life has been constucted or maybe you were just born with it. But i know the feeling, i can really understand. Sometimes, if the medicine doesnt work, then just say to yourself, "am i gonna let this stupid disorder control what and cannot do and experience" its just a deal with it thing :( :( sometimes it can be linked to the past! i have a friend who actually completely got rid of it. I would strongly recommend you get a prescription, and do as your doctor ses, as my social anxiety was very severe. Depending on yours, ask yourself "Is this affecting my life" "Am i coping" If you have a "no" then i would go and see the doctor, the pills can really settle it for a while. :) I learned to cope with it as i eventually found the pills didnt work and i completely just ignored it and concentrated on something else, its hard but you learn from experience, And yeh, if you want my opinion, the medicine just like helps you chill, it lasts quite a while and you can concentate on what people are saying, the medicine is a good start, and will help you as your talking to people and learning to cope while the disorder is knocked out. But its not a cure :( you have to learn, how did this start, why, and find out what is causing it and eventually you will naturally learn to tackle it. Life is short Dont let this stupid, pointless disorder bring your lifes potential down Best of luck ^_^

I suffer from the same thing. You may have social anxiety and avoidant personality disorder and it comes from being humiliated, abused in life by groups of people in life so as an adult you fear being around groups of people for fear of being hurt, humiliated again. It's a serious condition. I stay in the house often too. For awhile I thought was I lazy but after much searching and soul finding I found what's the matter with me. Please go on the net and look up avoidant personality disorder and social anxiety and try if you can to see a therapy or psychologist before going to psychiatrist for medicine. Psychiatrist are so quick to give out medicine and don't listen, go to psychologist and therapist to see what they feel is the problem but like me you may fear them or fear your being judged by them.

You probably have some kind of anxiety disorder (obviously). I have the same thing. Make an apt. with a psychiatrist, so you can be properly diagnosed and treated. ;) Good luck! If you ever need to talk about anything, please email me. Here is a forum I go to which also has a lot of information about anxiety and the different types on the main page.

We all have feelings of anxiety from time to time. But how can you tell if your anxiety is out of control? If you experience restlessness, nervousness, bad temper, racing thoughts, rapid heartbeat, muscle tension, extreme difficulty resting or concentrating, you probably need to get help.
Several treatment methods are available ranging from hypnotherapy, natural remedies to prescription drugs.
