I endured 5 yrs of desensitization shots to improve my ability to tolerate certain allergens. The goal in this process is to inject you with small amounts of allergens to encourage your body to become used to it and diminish your reaction. It isnt a cure and the outcome is different for each person because it all depends on how well your body responds to the treatments. Usually you wont know how well its worked until the treatment is over. But for me it was worth it, im still allergic but not nearly as bad as before....my symptoms are tolerable and much easier to treat now with over the counter medications IF im having a bad day, which is not often. Good Luck

I got allergy shots from the age of 8 until I was in high school - around 15 I think. I was allergic to everything in nature with my worst being mold, freshly cut grass, etc. Fortunately, I was not strongly allergic to dogs or cats. Yes the shots helped me build up some immunity. I still have seasonal allergies and take Wal-itin (Walgreen generic Claritin) every day. If allegra doesn't work, ask you doctor to prescribe something else.
I did find that nose sprays like Rhinocort and Flonase do help but you have make sure you take it each day!
Good luck.

Try a saline nasal RINSE (not a spray) A full warm water saline rinse goes in one nostril and out the other. It draws out all the gunk and shrinks the tissue (like swimming in the ocean). I've been doing it at work too.
The buffered salt doesn't 'sting' as much as plain salt water. You can use a new method like Nasopure, or the vintage, Netipot. The special bottle and salt is about $20.
You can do this a often as you like with no bad side effects.
You don’t need a prescription for this therapy. So if you live in a state like mine, they’ve pretty much “outlawed” sudafed medicine. Drug-free is really the way to go on a frequent-use basis. (I put in a link for “what” and “how” – there’s also some good info on wiki)

Yes they work and they work well. As for Allegra not working........you have to tell your doc it isn't working for you. Your doctor cannot read your mind so he/she doesnt' have a clue that this med it not working. Talk to your doc and they can try a different med for. ANY TIME you are taking a medication and it isn't doing what it should be doing YOU have to call the doc and tell him as the doc cannot read his patients minds to know this.
