I think it depends on your memory, and practice.I´m spanish , and it isn´t easy learning english to me , because all around me is in spanish... so ... if I learn four or five words each day and make them mine...I´m happy! Maybe this isn´t the answer you want, but it´s just my opinion.

As many as you can memorize, probably about 10. It also depends on how often you use the words because if you don´t use them often you´ll forget them.
