Yes it is annoying because it is their policy to say something back to the customer. That is what they were trained to say. However, here is a good example: Today I was at a MacFrugals. I was the 4th person in line. The cashier told all 3 people in line before me thank you and for me, she did not say one word. I think it's because they say "thank you" to everyone and if you are the last one they don't care so much anymore. It's still wrong though... they should say it to all customers.
So here is a suggestion: you can either say "thank you " back to get their attention (which I did and then she thanked me back), don't shop their again if you became offended, or simply let it go.
Yes it does annoy you and you have every right to be annoyed, but remember it's not you, it's them. Maybe she said thank you to 100 customers before you and they said nothing back and when she finally got a nice customer like you, she thought you were going to be the same.

The least someone can do when I am handing over my hard earned money is a simple "thank you". It irritates me greatly. I don't care if it is the grocery store clerk or the personal banker, I deserve and expect a simple acknowledgement that I have handed over my money to them in return for goods or services. I am paying their paycheck. Simple as that.
There was a particular clerk at the local grocery who wouldn't even look at me. No hello, no reciting the total to me, no thank you, just a sour look and a blank stare at me. I complained to her manager eventually. Just because she was ticked off at the world does not mean that she should forget simple manners.
This is why I shop more and more online these days.

I think generally people have become more rude, but I know what you mean. Usually not only do they not say "thank you"; they also neglect to say, hello, how are you, or any other customer-friendly greeting. Sometimes they just stare at you and hope you don't say anything to them either.
I think a lot of it has to do with the employee's personality. I also (try) to take into consideration that usually clerks and csr's, attendents, cooks, etc receive low pay and the company (and customer) will get what they pay for. It's also a reflection of the company and management and their enforcement of disciplinary issues (I have NEVER experienced rudeness in Publix, for example).

I think stores must be really desperate for help because all too often I encounter sullen, moody clerks who seem to regard it as a bother to have to wait on customers. Given that attitude, it's only natural that they not thank you for your purchase -- after all, you should thank them for being willing to take your money, right?
As you can tell, I think there are cashiers and sales clerks who should be shown the door if they can't do their jobs with more courtesy and enthusiasm -- at least conceal the fact that they're bored and unhappy and not make me as a customer suffer from their problem attitude.

What makes me super mad is when I go through the drive through and the person doesn't look at me, doesn't speak, just hands me my stuff and expects me to be the one saying thank you! I get so mad about that..store clerks really don't bother me unless they don't say anything at all. You can be standing there for a very long time while they are checking your groceries and their silence is just rude. I always make sure I say thank you or your welcome. It's called manners.

It doesn't annoy me b/c I don't expect it. I realize that clerks don't make alot of money, therefore, those who hire don't necessarily hire people who are suited to this kind of work. But when one is polite I always respond back appropriately and with a smile. Maybe I should be a clerk...lol.

what about when the customer doesn't say thank you?
i work retail part time and sometimes you go out of your way to please a customer and no one says thank you...we've left the store open extra time just so they could finish their shopping...called other stores, offered to have merchandise shipped...returned items that shouldn't have been returned...
but then again, i frequently see my co-workers giving the customers attitudes, rolling their eyes when the customer asks a question, etc...
politeness goes both ways i suppose...and everyone has a bad day now and then...
i've learned to give everyone the benefit of the doubt (i put myself in their shoes...if you're having a terrible day, you may forget to smile sometimes...)
maybe say "thank you" instead of "you're welcome"...that way you can thank each other...

If it was only the clerks.....
"Thank you" is rare in everyday transactions.
I, personally, don't mind. Instead, when leaving the shop I say "thank you" and I am satisfied with myself. Politeness is in one's personality and it can be a clerk or a prime minister who might not have it.
(Welll..... the prime minister has to say "thank you" as the protocol suggests!!)

It doesn't bother me at all. I am conducting business, not doing a favor. The business transaction is I give them money I get my product. If they say thank you fine - if they don't fine. I am usually not even thinking about them I am thinking about the next thing I have to do in the day!

Not as much as it annoys me when people refuse to type, "you," and instead type, "u." What's worse is when people are so lazy that they won't type, "your," and instead type, "ur." Last time I checked, "ur," was not a word that could be used in this way, but an ancient city in Mesopotamia.
