"IF the world didn't know about Christ, people would be killing each other and stealing, and whoreing ourselves onto one another"
Somehow, you dumb brick, people managed to get along before Christ. And we will still be getting along when you religion has turned to so much dust.

Long before the 10 Commandments societies were living together under the rule of law. It all began in the clan phase of paleolithic man, when a combination of an instinct for social behavior and the experience of group living gave rise to a tradition of ethics and morality. With the advent of agriculture, when the first urban environments came into being and writing was developed, the ethics and morality were codified (See "The Code of Hammurabai").
The 10 Commandments were merely another episode of codification.
Morality is not the exclusive province of Christianity. Most of the people in the world are not Christian, and yet maintain a remarkably similar code of ethics.
Another thing that you might notice is that people who know about Christ kill each other and steal from each other, etc.
The notion that the relatively recent development of "Christian morality" is the only way that ethical behavior can be shaped is historically naive and a piece of lazy thinking.

Those things weren't happening in huge numbers in Japan and China before missionaries brought the message of Christ. They happen in countries of mostly Christians today even though Jesus is known. There have been morals as long as there have been humans. Moral codes and laws have existed since before Judaism and befoe the Bible and will continue long after its gone. Most of the 10 Commandments aren't even laws, they are just silly anyway (my neighbor doesn't have a goat to covet, but he does have a nice ride...). We do not kill each other, hurt each other, steal each other's things because we have respect and concern for each other. This is something children learn between 2-5 years old, long before religion has a chance to teach them the commandments.

Rational Inquiry, maybe?
Considering the nature of several of the 10 commandments are purely religious, while others are consistently repeated in ancient societies outside of Jewish ones...
I don't see how one can say that morality must come from the "Ten Commandments".
I also disagree about the "without Christian ethics, everyone would be killing each other". The fundamental laws in the "Ten commandments" have long been a part of society laws and ethics, even before Christianity and Judaism.
Not to mention, you don't see Atheist raging out of control like you suggest even though Atheists don't follow Christian ethics.
I'm not trying "to blind the world to Jesus". This is merely your rhetoric.
It's as fair as saying that "Christians only want to escape rationality and blind themselves in emotions".

I'm not an atheist, I'm a Christian, but I will answer this one anyway, and I would appreciate all of you reading this.
The Bible says that God planted the "law" (10 Commandments) in men's hearts from the beginning. It's in the book of Romans, first chapter.
Therefore, even if man doesn't even believe in God, he is inherently following the 10 Commandments. But you know as well as I do that man always messes up. It's impossible to be "good" all the time.
That's why you need Christ. We can try to be good on our own, but we will fail. Only through Christ are we saved from death.
There are those among here who think this is hogwash. Well, I used to be one of those, so I understand.
But, Guys, even though I didn't believe it before, I believe it now, and it's true about God opening our eyes to understanding.

First, I'm not sure why people would want to do any of those vile things you mention.
Second, this would be a very interesting question to ask the entire population of India, or China, or Japan, for example, since Christianity has been a marginal religion (at best) in those countries.
Third, Christianity got its laws and morals from the existing social contract, so it's not like you guys have something unique there.

People kill each other under the banner of religion too. Are you trying to say that they are kept in check by Christianity etc.?
I don't see that happening. People will do what they want, no matter what they claim to follow.
It is wrong to assume that people who do not follow Christianity (or Judaism) would be just mindless serial killers. Atheists that I have met place a great value on life - this is the only one they get.
The world does know about Jesus. And they are killing eachother over it.

I used to work in the same complex with a Morel system. They grew mushrooms in nutrient media. It was cool. But on a more serious note, moral codes exist in pretty much all major religions, so I think that, if Christianity did not exist, something would fill its spot and give us a very similar code to the Ten Commandments, at least in spirit if not to the very letter.

What a shallow view of the world and history you have
There are and have been countless civilizations that have never heard of your god or your savior or you bible that have a strong a moral code, even stronger than your religion portends to have.
Where did they get that moral code from ??
Plato talked about being good to one another 500 years before Jesus was on the earth. Buddha even longer
Where did these people get that moral code from?
Just using the mind they have and a little common sense
If you need your god to tell you not to kill, steal, murder, rape, I truly feel pity for you

Our laws come from principles like the Golden Rule and social contract theory. These are the same principles that much of your religion is based on.
If the only thing stopping you from killing and stealing is the threat of hell, then I sincerely hope I never meet you. It's no wonder you can't spell 'moral', you clearly don't know what the word means.
