I am trying to find out the day a family member passed away a few years ago. Does anyone know of any databases/websites I can try?

The Social Security Death Index lists people who were receiving Social Security when they passed away. The Index is posted free on RootsWeb ( http://ssdi.rootsweb.com ).

Another approach: Try to find an obituary. Obits are most likely to appear in a newspaper for the person's last residence or hometown. Go to the newspaper's website to see if obituary information from a few years ago might still be online.

If that doesn't do it, and you have some time, you can contact the relevant government agency to get a copy of the person's death certificate. Generally you get records of birth, death, marriage, divorce and other vital records from the relevant agency in the state where the birth, death, marriage or divorce took place. A web search for "vital records" and the name of the state should get you started.

There is a site. Not sure the name something like web root. Anyway once you find it you put in a name or ssn and magic up comes a list of people matching your criteria with their dob dod etc. The list is updated periodically. Last time i went to site it was complete thru sometime in Feb 2007. The one I am thinking about advertises that they are the most complete social security index on the web.

You can call the City Hall/County Courthouse in the town and state they passed away in and ask them to look in their records. I've seen them myself at a townhall I was in and saw death records dating to 100 years prior.

I would contact the newspaper in the town/city where this person lived and see about checking their archives. Our local paper has a website that you can joint to get access to their archives.

Good luck!
