I was wondering what your opinion was. I know every child is different, but I was just wondering what the 'average' was. What time do you put your 9 year old to bed?

Well, my son is up (regardless of what time he's put to bed) before I am. Very rarely is he still sleeping when my alarm goes off at 7:00am. He has a built-in-alarm-clock and is up usually at 6:30am it doesn't matter what time he's put to bed. He's always been like that.

Our nine year old is sent to his room between 8 and 8:30 pm on school nights and is allowed to read until about 9 or 9:30. What time is lights out depends on the day's behavior and the next day's schedule. He is up every morning a 6 am when he hears his father getting ready for work and has to be to school at 8:30 am. He is usually up and dressed and has already eaten breakfast when I get up to get his brothers ready at 7 am.

The answer to this question would be - your child should go to bed at the time that enables him to get up in the morning, at the time he needs to, without being grumpy or rushed, and that he wakes up because he has had enough sleep.
If he is going to bed at 9:30, but is hard to get up in the morning, make it 15 minutes earlier and see how that helps.
Make bedtime earlier by 15 minutes until your child wakes up and has had enough sleep.
Some children need more sleep than others. As teens, my older children seemed to cope with a small amount of sleep through the week, but then slept a lot at week-ends.
Having said all that, my 9 year old goes to bed at 10pm as we home-school and there is no hurry for her to get up in the mornings. She wakes at around 8:00, has her breakfast and is ready to start her work at around 9:00.
It seems like she needs about 10 hours sleep a night. If she needed more, I would put her to bed at the time that gave her enough sleep so that she would still wake up at 8:00am.
Hope this info helps.
Good Luck!

Most Dr think children need ten hours of sleep. My children are early risers too. But my 8 and 11 year old goes to bed at 8:30 until the time change. Were easing into the time change. On the weekends I let them stay up a extra hour. My 8 year old is doing good to stay awake.

Both of my kids age 5 and 12 have to go to bed no later than 9:00 during the school year.
In the summer I let them stay up until 10:00 to 10:30

My almost 9 year old(couple weeks) goes to bed on school nights at 9, lights out at 9:30. I encourage reading books/magazines for that 1/2 hour. Works well. My 11 year old has the same bedtime, but she usually ends up going to bed right away at 9. Sometimes they have to listen to their body's.

800-830pm is good time and worked for me. My son, who is now 11, has been on a schedule for a long time and I find that young children need a good amount of sleep. So, at 9 he was surely going to bed by 8:00. Now, he's in bed at 8:30 during school days...good luck with this one.

While my husband and i were melding our family of four children, we realized that with neither of us getting home until around six, putting the kids to bed early didn't give us the time we wanted with them. Most of our kids are in bed by 9 pm. Our four year old will go to bed earlier if she's tired, and if our 9 yr old is sleeping in class we make her bedtime earlier. Our 7 yr old seems to be fine as is the baby. All kids are different, but if you start with thinking about how much time you actually have with your children and adjust bedtime to what's best for them, you should be fine.

My seven year old gets up at 7:30... She goes to bed around 8-9. I usually aim for 8:30 to 9... her body is changing so much as she grows it always changes. If she gets up really good in the morning.. I put her to bed around 9 to 9:30... if she has problems getting up in the morning then I put her in bed earlier.. but usually say 8:30i'sh.. weekends at 10
