i got a dog when i was 8 he was a German shepherd and i had a cat when i was 3 so you kinda say i was already for the responsibility of owning a dog. I'm 17 now and since my pets died 3yrs ago in a house fire I'm ready for another dog and cat i think it depends on how responsible the person is and not the age. I was ready at 8 some people aren't ready till they are older

I always had dogs growing up and I understand what you are saying. Being in school and having other responsibilites its tough to do a lot of stuff like real owners. However, I can't imagine not having a dog and it is a great learning experience for when you are older. I am now 22 and I just got first dog...that is mine ...not the family dog. I have the time to take her to obedience class every week, and she just started agility class. I also have the money to spend on toys and good food. I was so excited to get my own dog...but I think you are at a good age to care and learn the responisiblites of being a good dog owner. Good luck!!!!

The best age is when the owner is responsible to understand the needs of the dog and can and will actually care for him that way. Dogs are a huge responsibility, but most people love to have little puppies to play with and cuddle with, but puppies are only little for less than a year and then they are grown up for the rest of their lives.
If you don't learn how to train this dog well and make him nice to live with, then you both will be unhappy.
Dogs need to be fed good food.
Dogs need their vac. just like you do.
Indoor dogs need to be walked/ran EVERY day.
Dogs need to be trained to be housebroken.
Dogs need to learn not to get on your bed, sofa, etc.
Dogs (who are pets) must learn not to be aggressive.
Dogs are like children and must learn to live with others nicely.

I have always been around dogs growing up, but I didn't get my own dog until I was 24. It really is like having your own child. This should be able to show you some responsibility though....which will help you later on in life. Good luck and enjoy your new puppy!

I don't think theres an age set in stone, you may be feeling alittle overwhelmed right now, but just remember your dog has a home now and is most likely happy to be there with you. Just set aside alittle time everyday to spend with him or her, remember its not just a dog its is a living breathing being, just as you need to know that you are loved so does this animal, so just settle in and have fun growing up together.

well i think now its a good time because dog are one of many pet used to get attraction. YOU may be walking down you dog when suddenly you meet a guy who was also dog walking. Wow romantic right however it could have better if you get it at 8-9 cause by the time your dog last breath it will be when you need to leave for university. which i think that you want to be with the dog for her last minute.
