Actually yes it is fine. Hartz makes an enteric coated aspirin product out there that is made specifically for dogs. It is 81mg per pill and 1 pill per 15lbs of weight. This is the same dosage that is used in the low dose/heart dose Bayer aspirin but the coating makes it so that the pill doesn't dissolve until it is in the intestines. This eliminates any stomach upset that aspirin can cause.

*EDIT*
For all those who are giving thumbs down votes to answers that it is okay, you really need to do some research prior to just jumping on a bandwagon. While I respect the breeders advice, I disagree. My golden retriever/yellow lab cross has mild hip displasya and has been on an aspirin regimen since he was 3 months old.

Aspirin is NOT harmful to a dog if given in the proper dosage as prescribed by a vet or according to the bottle instructions.

Please don't. Although aspirin won't automatically kill a dog (it's likely to if you give it to a cat), if the dose is high it can cause kidney failure, blood clotting problems and stomach ulcers, especially when it's given by mouth and particularly in young dogs. And if you gave too little it wouldn't work anyway. At the very least you should call your vet and see what dose they recommend. I've never met anyone who prescribed aspirin for dogs, the common painkillers used in the UK are carprofen (Rimadyl) and meloxicam (Metacam); we know they're safe and they work.

Why is he in pain? If it's anything to do with gastrointestinal problems (vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhoea), then aspirin and similar drugs can't be used as they could worsen the problem.

It's impossible to say without knowing WHY he's in pain. There might be something much better than aspirin for it. I'd really suggest that if he has pain then he should be examined by a vet and have a treatment regime worked out that's safe and effective, especially since he's so young.

Good luck with him!

You didn't say WHY your dog is in pain which makes your question imposable to answer. In the proper dosage aspirin is commonly used for dogs, but should only be done with proper supervision (think vet).
It is the Ibuprofen base drugs that can effect kidney function, and should be avoided.
You should remember that a dog will process pain differently than we do, and more often than not we will be doing the dog a disservice by giving it anything. Giving a dog a pain reliever so that WE will feel better is just not in the dogs best interest.

I know alot of the vets prescribe similar drugs to what is used on humans but i would be wary of giving anything without the vets advice, at least give them a call, some things are not meant for animals and the safe amounts will differ greatly.
Also aspirin can be a bit dodgy because of the blood thinning agent.
Why do u need to give it anyway? if he is in pain he needs to go to a vets.

I once took in a stray beagle that was an older dog, and he had a huge bad sore on his leg so we called the vet. They told us we could give him asprin but we didnt know what it would do to him so we didnt, we just kept him company until someone came to get him...you may or may not can, but i would check with your vet or a local vet first..

aspirin for joint pain is fine-my nearly 13 yr heeler has the odd twinge in her left front leg if she overdoes the excercise-so she will be given a QUARTER of a 75mg aspirin if she is favouring the leg more than usual-once at night and then once in a morning-she is usually right by then and back to her normal bouncy self! but if your dog is suffering from stomach problems then no i wouldnt give aspirin. by the way for all the doubting thomases my vet says this is the best way to deal with MINOR joint pain! she is also on cod liver oil, garlic oil, brewers yeast, MSM and glucosamine! she must be the fittest, well coated OAP doggie in our area!

Yes, aspirin like many other human drugs can be safely given to your pets. In fact a lot of the medicines my vet prescribes she calls in to my pharmacy and I have to pick them up there because they are actually for humans. Although before giving anything to your dog you need to take it to the vet to find the cause of the pain first. I know some breeds are prone to growing pains in their legs and if that is the case your vet will probably prescribe and pain killer/anti inflammatory.

Aspirin is pretty much the only human drug you can give a dog. A small dose won't hurt anything. My dad gave aspirin to his Great Pyrenees when they were puppies and they were just fine.

I wouldn't do anything like that without checking with a vet first. You should never self medicate an animal unless you have been trained to do so, ALWAYS call the vet and ask before you do anything for the sake of your pet.
Poor little puppy :( I hope he's okay!

Check with your vet. I take dihydrocodeine painkillers daily and they were invented to be used for animals. But never give aspirin to a CAT, it's toxic to them.
Edit: You'd be surprised how many veterinary prescribed medications are also prescribed for people.
