I think some do. I think it seems to many - especially young girls - to offer a sense of empowerment. Serious Wiccans generally differentiate between what they call "fluffy bunnies" - kids who think the'll end up like something out of Charmed and pretty much lay claim to the title of "witch" and play with spells without any study - and real practitioners who put a relatively low priority on "spells" but focus primarily on knowing the ways of the Universe.
Spells are basically just Wiccan prayers. They aren'ty the primary focus of the religion any more that praying is what Christianity is all about.

Perhaps some, but some become Chrisians because their friends go to a "cool" church... it's about the same as for any other religion.
Too, just as ther are "christians" who know nothing of what they believe, there are Wiccans who know nothing of wicca.
I'm a Wiccan because I've studied my religion and believe it strongly. I've worked and gone throug great introspection. I find that I agree with some Wiccans on some things and not on others. It's been a real journey.
I became interested in my own spirituality after what I believe are past life recollections that resulted in a poem that sort of made itself up; it was unlike the writing process tha I usually use, and this one simply came out at a time when I knew nothing of substance regarding witchcraft. I suppose that one could say that I convinced myself before ever having heard of Wicca. That was around 1982.
True Wicca involves a great deal of work. It's not simply picking up a book and declaring yourself a high-priestess. Some do that, but these are like those who one day claim salvation and the next, start a church. There are many people out there claiming titles which they've not worked for, and who offer little of substance.
In the end, perhaps some come to Wicca because of the "cool" factor; some of these stay and some don't. Then, there are core groups of Wiccans who have worked and studied and are able to teach with substance.

There are some out there who watch 'Charmed' or 'The Craft' and think that it is cool and they want to be able to do what these ladies do in Hollywood.
I have met a lot of Wiccans who started out in the religion because they thought it was cool. Different. But since then have become sincere in their faith.
I think for teens this is the biggest draw. Along with the shock value of being able to announce you're a Witch. Some get tired of the religion and go back to whatever they were before - but some move forward and grow out of this phase into a serious follower.

I would say that Teens are the ones who are the most likely ones to become wiccan to be "cool". I will admit that there will be some out there who will take it as seriously as it should be. But there are teens out there who only become wiccan to rebel against parents, teachers, and peers who tease them. They do not realize how much trouble they can get into until its too late. It's not a game. Dispite how many people out there who like to portray it as such, just because they are misinformed, and too afraid to do some REAL research.

I'm sure there are people who *think* they want to become Wiccan because they thinkit's cool. But they usually back out when they realize it's a lifestlye. Most Wiccans believe it.

The wiccans I know (my sister is one) believe in it. She doesn't do it because it's cool or she wants to stand out from the crowd. It brings her peace and happiness. I'm all for people doing what makes them happy. I have nothing against any religion as long as they don't seek to impose their views on anyone else.

I am a 31 year old Wiccan who has never followed fads in my life. Wicca is a valid religion just as Christianity, Judaism, Islam and all the others are. I would suggest that if you don't know much about Wicca, you learn about it before you make such ignorant comments.

I'm sure there are some people who are just going along for the ride, but there are plenty who actually believe it.

I have no doubt that some do. It's so different it can be a very immersive world, and very exciting.
I prefer a more generic brand of paganism myself. I can't get into the structure of any religion anymore.
