My wife brought him home from the shelter last month. He's about 2 years old and already been 'fixed'. He is the most loveable dog I've ever seen. Well, maybe a little too affectionate. I don't care about breed standards and all that. I just want a healthy, happy family friend.

Border Collies are wonderful dogs...however they are also extremely intelligent and very active. This is a dog that needs a lot of room to run and trips to the dog park on a regular basis. He is also a dog that will learn so fast that he will figure out what you want him to do before you know what you want, be patient...they are VERY VERY eager to please and they can be monsters because of that. Border Collies get bored easily so if you don't want table legs chewed off, or huge holes dug in the backyard, provide him with plenty of toys and stimulation. The best thing you can do with your new dog is keep him busy and to make him feel needed, they are working dogs and that's what they want to do. Enjoy.

We have a border and she is wonderful. But, as others have said, they need room and exercise. We take ours for a 2 mile walk off-leash every day, rain or shine. When she misses even one day she is not happy.

The abca has lots of information on borders here:

If she has not been trained then you should start doing so now. Border's love the attention, learn fast, and will actually be better adjusted if they feel they are working. In this case "working" can be as simple as obeying your commands.

i can answer this one , first of they need lots of excersice , and mind stimulation , they aren't not for couch potatos , they are best with you at all times inside and outside , and they need boundries , if they get bored they will get into trouble , they are very loyal , and they are a good watch dog ,that is different then a guard dog , border collies are actually a working dog , i hope you have plans on being very active with this dog , and never take this dog for granted , there herding instinct is natural and it needs to be put to use properly , they are great with frisbee , agility , and ball , . also watch his food , the richer the food , the higher the energy , lamb and rice is the best for a border collie , i think .

Try a Halti, or a Muzzle. It might be safer to get insurance on your collie, incase she does get involved in a fight. Try carrying an umbrella with you, or a Pepper spray, if another dog comes towards yours, use it on them (don't beat the other dog with the umbrella, just open it real fast infront of them, and spray the pepper spray near their face), it will distract them long enough for you and your collie to escape. Otherwise, the safest option is to load the collie into a car, take her out to a field (an enclosed field preferably) and play with her, or take her swimming, thats if she likes water. I have the same problem with my GSD and other dog walkers, who mindlessly walk their dogs off the lead. I dont want a dog fight to occur but if it does it will be the other owners fault for not obeying leash laws in the first place.

You can google Border Collie and prob. find some interesting sites for this particular breed. If you are looking to train or re-train, in this case this already nice dog, I have found Cesar Milans information to be totally invaluable. You can google his site and even view his information on YouTube. I have found that he trains owners how to have a dog that your guests will love as much as you do. :)

Clicker training is a good start. It's very important to use a training system that's reward-based. Here are some links:

Many people do Agility with their BC's and it's tremendous fun. You can find a school here:

it tells you a lot about border collies. they are very loveable and VERY smart- they tend to need a lot of attention and things to do (like a job) they like to run around a lot and herd. if you have kids you will soon find the dog herding them when they are outside playing. its kind of funny!
