nobody knows specifically who wrote this book... transcribed by hand (errors included) from one language to the next and back again (thats more errors)

written at a time when the average person thought 40 was old age, infectious disease was caused by divine punishment not microorganisms, mental illness was a demon living inside someone.. the list goes on and on

yet somehow this book is the answer to everything... ask a question about christianity and you will recieve quote after quote of mistake ridden text thrown at you

case in point is evolution... to every reputable scientist i.e. ones not paid for by christian foundations and submit to peer reviewed journals, evolution is as obviously true as gravity is
however the bible disagree... why.... because it was written 2000 years before anyone had any idea of evolution... thats fine for 2000 years ago but not now....

isnt it time to accept these issues and either update the bible or bin it?

it is inevitable that a hand written book would contain mistakes... nothing to do with god... just plain old fashioned human error... also notes or questions written on the side by the last guy to transcirbe it may get incorpotated into the text...

are christians so arrogant as to think that a book (any one for that matter) can be hand written by a huge number of people in several different countries and languages over 2000 years and wouldnt have mistakes... ive seen mistakes in the printed version of the bible....

there are none so blind as those that will not see

It's been time to "bin it" for a couple thousand years...

Problem is, true believers (who base their belief on things for which there is no evidence) aren't going to let facts get in the way of a good fairy tale...
There are those who believe every single word in the bible is absolutely true, despite hundreds of contradictions, hundreds more outright falsehoods, and complete disagreement with scientific fact. Then there are those who rationalize away the contradictions and errors, still claiming it's accurate. Finally there are those who still claim a divine origin and purpose for it, while admitting it's not absolute fact.

All of the above are deluded -- and you can't argue rationally with delusion. :(

Peace.

Granted the bible has contradictions, inaccuracies, stories and other problems. However the transcription errors are minimal if existent. As the Jewish books where transcribed, if a mistake was made the whole section was cut out and replaced. The effectiveness of this "quality control" has been verified by comparing current versions with older ones, such as the dead sea scrolls.

The new testament is another question, however modern translation go through rigorous literary criticism and comparison across sources.

This is not to say that the contents do not have inherent problems and lack of demonstrable evidence, merely that there are relatively few transcription errors.

Problems with thinking? First to make the statement that the Bible has errors is not all untrue, but could you be more specific and show me, say 5 errors that would make a difference?
Now I have a question about evolution? Obviously it has some good points, I have a problem with the archeology of science? Why do they only find the complicated life forms in the strata with suddenness? instead of finding the evolved changes? In simple if man evolved from the lower animals then the CSI of it should be there? Because of this fact? that's why it called the theory of evolution. The sad thing is that its taught in school as fact. If you care to discuss this further? gemhandy@hotmail.com

Do you have any idea of what you're talking about? Why would ANYONE want to translate the Bible from English to Hebrew??? That's stupid. John of Patmos died when he was in his 80's, not 40's. People LOVE to claim the Bible has mistakes, but other than the odd typo, I've never seen one.
There IS no Theory of Gravity. We do NOT know why or how it works, we only know that it does indeed work. That's a law, not a theory. Similarly, we know that evolution works. We have no clear proof that Chance is the only viable mechanism for it. Just because something is old doesn't make it wrong or in need of 'updating'. What arrogance makes you think you are smarter than our forefathers?

In the 17th century, everyone was sure that the sun revolved around the earth. The bible said so. And everyone agreed that the bible was truth. Then a man named Galileo Galilei came up with the idea that the earth actually revolved around the sun. Galileo was persecuted by the Church as a heretic and forced to recant his ideas, or be burned at the stake.

Today, we accept Galileo as fact. Today, we're seeing a similar debate over evolution vs creation.

Even the Pope has warned against repeating the same mistakes the Church made with Galileo.

In the future, evolution will be as accepted as Galileo is today. It is a fact that the earth revolves around the sun. The future will look back at us, regarding evolution, the same way we look back at those who cried heresy over the idea that the Church could be incorrect in its belief that the sun revolves around the earth.

Your assertions are laughable.

Please cite for me a specific translation error that you have found from the original Hebrew, Greek or Aramaic. Please don't include transliteration errors... (I doubt that you know what that means anyway)

At what time in history was 40 years considered old age? Further, where specifically does the Bible say that infectious disease is caused by devine punsihment? Please, since you have read it, be specific. Also is all mental disease as indicated by your question caused by demons? Or were those caused by demons documented as having been cast out? There is a difference.

Please... be specific in the "mistake ridden text" Cite at least one mistake.

The Bible doesn't refute or support evolution, your argument is moot. Evolution, is still.... in fact, a theoretical model. At least be intellectually honest when you make your claims. You say that the Bible disagrees with evolution, please... be specific and cite the chapter and verse that refutes a peer reviewed scientist's documented viewpoint on evolution.

At the very least, read the book you are refuting. Otherwise you are as blind as you claim Christians of being, therefore I would invite you to keep your uninformed opinion to yourself.

Thanks, have a nice day.... I'll pray for you.

Clearly it is time for that, but there are a lot of very primitive-minded individuals left in society.

What you are forgetting is that evolution, whether genetic or social, often takes a VERY long time. A new mutation can arise quite suddenly and even spread quite rapidly if it is advantageous.... but it can take vast amounts of time for the old, unevolved versions to eventually be so outmatched as to go extinct. Afterall, the changes evolution relies on must be small.... subtle.... not too risky. One cannot afford to be risky when playing by trial and error. Macroevolution is fiction and the domain of misunderstanding.... as no huge change ever happened overnight.

Just give it time.

The bible will be scrapped in a few hundred years... and likely people will have found something far superior to current science by then too...

Well ask yourself a few questions, like:
Did evolution create eyes with sight?
Did evolution create lungs with breath?
Did evolution create a heart that can operate for years and never need a battery, gas, or eleectricity?
Did evolution create the eardrum with hearing?
Can evolution step in front of you right now, and stop you from breathing, then step back and allow you to breathe again, if he so chooses?
Can evolution take away your sight?
Did you know that science did not create that demon that is living inside of you and has demented your mind? GOD DID.
It will remain there, unless you decide it is time for it to go, but you can't get rid of it. So who will remove it, Evolution, or God? It's time for people to stand up for GOD!

My feeling is that since these books in the bible were written by witnesses to what happened at the time.... I really don't think that we can 'discard' things... plus, I have SEEN many of the things described in the bible... and evolution has not been proven to me, cuz i don't see the 'transitional' animals or fossils anywhere to support such stuff....

and since God Himself changed me when I accepted Jesus, into a new person with a new heart.... and i FELT the change and know the difference... I will not change what I know to be true

You are correct that there are many important truths that have been taken from the bible in translation. Yet, there are many fundamental truths found within the bible that we still need to learn.

Through modern revelation, the Lord has given us new scripture to compliment the bible. The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ.

Using the two books together, we can clarify a few important truths about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

To learn more about it go to www.lds.org.
