I think that the Friends parents should pay for an equal amount for all costs. If they don't want to then they can keep their daughter at home and you, your sister, and mom can all enjoy your vacation together. Their daughter will get as much benefit out of the car rental as your mother and you will. And since your mother is acting as Chaperon and Chauffeur they should not demean her contribution by quibbling about a few extra dollars for the car rental.

The issue isn't because she will be riding in the car anyway, but paying for a PORTION of the rental that she will be riding in. I just did a quick search on Expedia for a typical midsize car rental for one week. It's less than $200. Divide that by four people and you get $50. Your friend's mom is complaining about $50. Your mom is taking three girls to Florida -- what a responsibility! I hope you all have a great time!

Your friend's mom is being very petty. She should be so happy that her daughter is having a chance to have a wonderful vacation with a responsible adult in charge. What your friend's mom should do if she has any class at all would be to pay for that car rental part and then, when all of you return, take your mom out to a nice restaurant as a way to say "thank you for including my daughter in your plans.".

Is that $1400 per person?? I hope not. I think that makes the difference.
Technically your mom's friend is right in that you'd have to pay for the car whether her daughter was with you or not. But then that could be said for the hotel room too. It would be considerate of her to contribute to the cost of the car, but it doesn't sound as though she's very considerate.

Divide the rent of the car by the number of people going in the car and charge your friend's mom the amount for one person. Eg. $1000 rent, 4 persons......your friend should pay $250.

I agree with Carly. If she is going to ride in the car and go places in the car, she should help pay for the car. I am sure with less people your mom could rent a smaller car and save money. In a compact one person could squeeze into the back seat, this is hard for 2.
Besides, if she's going to fork out $1400 why is she being so picky about $100 tops for her portion????

Before going on a group trip, you should notify all the participants what the total cost will be. If the total cost includes the rental car then your friend's mom should pay. Otherwise, your friend should not go on the trip if she cannot afford her part of the trip.

She should pay her share of the car rental. She would pay taxi charges if you weren't renting a car, wouldn't she? This woman sounds very difficult. I would not take her daughter because she will find something negative to complain about afterward.

No because the need for the car rental is the same whether the friend goes along or not. The cost of the rental doesn't change just because one more person will be riding in it.
I agree with the other parent.

Your mom's friend is correct.
Your mom offered to take your friend along with your family.
Mom is renting the car in any case and if your friend did not come along, mom would still pay for the car.
As for food and spending money, yes, your friend's mom should provide for her keep while travelling with you.
