There's many different ways to give it to a cat. You can try grinding it up and rubbing it into a toy, or sprinking a little into the cat's food, or just give the cat an entire leaf or two.
The cat's response could be just about anything. When I was a teenager, I had two cats. One cat would just about bite my fingers trying to scarf down the catnip, then would spend the next half hour somewhat hyper, running around, rolling around on the ground (showing off his considerable fat), etc. The other cat would eat a little at a time, and would be stoned for hours. This cat was somewhat dimwitted to start with and would be dumb as a box of rocks while high on catnip, walking unevenly, rolling on the floor, falling on her side, purring and meowing at the same time. Great entertainment for me and the cats loved it!
Is it just for cats?... I guess so. I don't know what effect, if any, it will have on other animals.

yes catnip[ is for only cats. and if your cat is not interested in catnip then the is nothing wrong with the cat. try putting catnip in a homemade toy, cats will love the toy and if the cat gets annoyed with it then you can break the toy to give the cat catnip. don't feed your cat too much catnip either because it can make your cat get high and get really hyper like how chocolate makes us hyper. keep you cat from getting addicted too the hyper-making herb either!!

My cats LOVE fresh catnip - i just pick off a leaf and break it or smoosh it a little between my fingers to release the oils. You can also dry it the same way you'd dry fresh herbs or flowers (I've never done that myself).
As far as I know, only cats go crazy for catnip. But I've heard that you can use catnip to make tea (for people) and that it's pretty good.

yes catnip is just for cats..... ONLY for cats! The range of expected actions goes from going to sleep to getting very hyper and sprinting and playing around the house... i have witnessed both extremes and can be extremely funny to watch if the get hyper... but it could also have the nothing effect and they just like the taste and will still eat it.. also, just cuz you dont see a reaction doesnt mean they arent having a reaction.... I call it Kitty Weed.... hope that helps

Different cats have different reactions. Just like people with drugs/alcohol. I used to foster kittens and one of them would fall asleep almost as soon as smelling it, then we'd have to pick him up and move him to a safe place because his brother went wild and would attack anything breathing. My two older cats love it and will just lick it, scratch at it and rub or roll around all over where it is.
