This was traditionally a way to announce to "society" that you were now off the market. However it has turned into a tradition of celebration. If you want one, have one, just make it something simple. Most people I know have a BBQ at a park or in the backyard or something similar. Whatever you do, it does not need to be formal like a wedding, it should be a party.
Having said that, you should invite anyone you want. But I'm sure, just like your wedding, you would want family and friends there. I would say invite people who can realistically make it to the party (don't invite cousin Joe who's going to school 1000 miles away) and for those who live too far, just send an announcement.

Anyone that you want to share in your happy time. Depends if you have a limited on the number you have to invite just stick to close friends and family members, but remember those who you invite to the engagement party will also expect an invite to the wedding as well

The people you want to share the special occasion with, close family members & special friends. The simplest would be to announce the engagement by cards sent out with or without some sort of a party or just a gathering ( in this case you can even omit mentioning the purpose of the party, keeping until you got everybody together then surprise them), how much you can afford to spend, what kind of atmosphere you wish to create, etc. Best thing is discuss this with your girl.

Congratulations, your question is based on your budget, and the size of the venue...(at home, hall, restaurant etc)
1. You and your fiance should invite close family members, all your friends, work colleagues...
2. I like using Confetti http://www.confetti.co.uk they have great ideas on decoration, invites, themes, ideas etc.
You could do it through word by mouth, or make invitations (depending on your budget). You need an idea of how many people you are inviting, and what type of party you want.
At home - garden party with buffet food, music, and maybe even hire a marquee. Get a few bottles of champagne used for toast, wine, beers, and soft drink.
You could look at doing it in a local church hall. Or hire a section of a restaurant and have a quite meal, and go out to a bar afterwards.
There are loads of ideas... it all depends on your budget, and what you and your fiance wish to do.
Hope i have given you some ideas...
Good luck!!x

Family and friends not many are invited, some don't even do engagement party. Normally your parents, sister and brothers, grandparents, and then a few friends from both sides. This can be a small to large gathering.

Well, lol, you don't throw your own, that's for starters. If someone else is hosting it for you, then the guest list is easy. An engagement party is usually really informal, just at home drinks and snackies, no gifts, a chance for family to meet the bridal party, etc. You would invite the bridal party and their spouses, and immediate family members.

Everyone you know, people might get a bit upset if you don't invite them. As I'm learning now. Regretting not having a party me self. Keeping it to immediate family. Argh

Only close friends and family. dont make it too big by inviting everyone, only the people closest in your lives, they are the ones who will truly share in your joy. everyone else is just up for a party: free food and drink!!

Your fiance??
I would just invites friends. Wedding will be dominated by family and relatives, but enjoy the engagement as your life will be taken over by duties soon enough!

depends on your budget for starters. And do you want to keep it big or small and low key.
My sister had 90 at her party and hired the pub room/ bar plus disco. All in it set her back about 500 pounds with doing the buffet food herself.
