Might never happen. My cats are almost 8 years old (actually 3 months apart and not related), female spayed at 6 months, male neutered at 5 months, so that was a long time ago. Occasionally we see him mount her and bite the back of her neck like he's trying to get lucky. She gets mad at his stupidity and puts him in his place.

Our 3-yr-old neutered male still occasionally tries to mount his sister. Often as not, he gets the wrong end and tries to shag her head...
It might be a persistence of "kitten mounting" - some kittens play like that when they're young. The behaviour usually dies out when they get older, but he was neutered before puberty so his may not. I'd expect any behaviour from hormones to be calming down by now, but it could be a play habit.
So, it might be one of those quirks you just have to live with. He might do it less when he gets older. Other than annoying his female friend it probably won't cause any harm (he can't father kittens), but if he's doing it a lot you can try pulling him off her and distracting him.
Good luck!

It takes longer for the hormones in male cats to leave their bodies after a neutering than female cats. If he still tries to mate your female cat in a month's time, have a chat with the vet.

My little boy got neutered a week ago and he's still trying to mate with my arm, if that makes you feel better. Everyone tells me it takes a few months for male cats.

By age 6 or so months, testosterone is sometimes occurring, so it tends to have a half-life of 6 months, so that may be the issue. However, humping isn't necessarily sexual. it could be a dominance display.

Although they've been neutered, it can take up to 4 months for the hormone levels to readjust...give it a month longer. If he's still acting up, take him back to the vet as they may have only snipped one tube!

nicely, the sexual stress from the intercourse hormones are long gone... yet some cats nonetheless get fairly amorous interior the spring: rolling around on the floor, perky step, butt-heading extremely some products that scent stable to them.
