I haven't tried Tokina, so I can't comment on them.
I have Tamron and Sigma lenses, and I've found the optical quality to be pretty good on both, but not quite up to the Nikon's quality.
Mechanically, I find Tamron to be a little better. They feel a little sturdier than Sigmas.

i generally go with sigma, they are like gm, their lenses go from a chevette to a cadillac in terms of quality. you are better off with oem high end lenses, if you can afford them. i have one tamron lens and it is amazing, though the focus is slow. also i dont know much about tokina, but i know they do make some good ones.

I've used lenses by Sigma and Tokina when I shot 35mm film, and both were fine. You might want to check out lens tests at popphoto.com.

Generally I wouldnt go with a third party lens. I would stay with the company that made the camera. If it has to be those 3 I would say Sigma.

In the off-brand lenses, I think that the Sigma's right now are the best quality. IMHO

None of the above.

All the manufacturers you mentioned make at least one or two lenses that are regarded as acceptable by serious photographers, but mosts of their entry level stuff is really junky.

Try to stick to original manufacturer's lenses (Canon or Nikon) for your first lenses and then consider some other options once you've tried them for a while.

Camera salesmen always try to talk you into these lenses because their margins are higher, stay clear for a while.

Hope this helps!
