We have 7 cats in the house. (wow, right?) (5 girls and 2 boys) ok and the littlest one, (youngest and smallest just over 5 lbs) just got spayed. She went into heat once and when she was in heat one of the boys (well, maybe both I'm not sure) "mounted" her even though he's been neutered but now, after she's been spayed (still healing from it) every time he gets close to her (or visa versa) he hisses at her. I don't understand why? They used to lay together and lick each other (don't go there, innocent cat-love, not jaded human love) and everything

why has his attitude changed towards her?
does anyone know?

Please don't make fun of me, I'm really wondering and a little concerned.

Bandi, Now that they have been fixed. Their desires and attitudes towards each other have changed. The aspect of any sexual nature is no longer there. It may pass but I wouldn't hold my breath.

When the female was at the Vets being spayed she picked up all the smells from there....other animals, the Vet and everyone who works there and the general smells that are in a Vets office.

It's not that his attitude toward her has changed, her smell has changed and that's what he's reacting to.

We have four cats and when one goes to the Vet the other three hiss and spit at him or her for a day or so...even if she was only in the Vets office for 5 minutes.

My Vet told me...and this works...put a drop of vanilla on the base of the females tails and between her shoulder blades, that take all the "Vet" smells away and he should leave her alone after that.

Good luck, it's nothing to worry about...it's very common..even with cats that have been together for several years.

He probably doesn't recognize her. Cats recognize each other by smell (that's why they sniff each other's noses and hineys), and she probably smells different (maybe like a vet's office). He will probably come around in a little while. Just like when you bring a new cat in, they hiss at each other for a little while, then they're best pals. There is an outside chance he never will, but it's most likely they will be back to normal soon.

Yeah, that's happened to us too, and as everyone says, it's just the different smell and they will get over it. Don't worry about it.

We presently have two indoor cats plus there are three barn cats who live here but don't really "belong" to us. They just wandered in, and my soft-hearted wife makes sure they have food and water available in the barn. It's OK with me, as long as she doesn't over-feed them - they help keep the mouse population down. Once in a while they catch one of "our" songbirds, but not very often. The owls and hawks get more of them. We found cardinal feathers out in our orchard yesterday ;( where an owl had been dining.

She smells like the vet's office. Once the house smell has had a chance to get on her he'll accept her again. You can help by rubbing the other cats down with a towel and then rubbing her with it.

I had the same problem. Its the smell, "Her" odor has changed and she probably smells like the Vet's office. You can probably even smell it. Give it a few weeks, even though she is spayed/neutered it'll take awhile. They might never be "friends" again but I doubt that she'll be lonely. (I have a few cats, too) Good Luck!!

she smells different. he can probably smell the vet on her fur and the anesthetic that she was put under with . he will get used to her again once she recovers from the surgery.

But of course they know...I mean they smell it she doesn't have that smell to send the message that she is on heat.
