I can think of 3 major ways that the average person can really help.

1. Buy their stuff. The factory worker will only feel a tiny bit of help from this, since corporations profit the most, but it's better to have a hard low paying job, than no job and no food.
No matter where you are, this will happen anyway, since the majority of consumer imports come from Asian countries.

2. Vote for politicians that will actually do something to promote and encourage strong capitalistic governments in Asia, in other words, vote Republican. Look at the strength of Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, 3 countries that we have helped tremendously, 3 countries with democratic capitalistic societies. Then, compare South Korea with North Korea. NK is a nightmare compared to South Korea. Japan is one of the worlds most economically properperous and productive nations. Vietnam, who we stopped helping, thanks to the government at the time and the lack of will of the people to finish it and do it right, is only now starting to crawl out of a hole that took 30 years to recover from. Almost every Vietnamese person I ever met is very nice, and fairly sharp, but the place is still a nation of poverty with many of the smartest and best educated leaving the country for better opportunities in other countries.
Anybody bought a car from Cambodia lately? Didn't think so.
The key is capitalism and freedom. When people have the freedom and rights that will allow them to establish their own businesses and directly benefit from their own hard work without fear of having it destroyed by their own government, they will flourish in ways that most countries around the world refuse to admit or imagine.

3. Find a charity that will allow you to support one individual at a time, and send them your money.

Good luck.
