Goo Gone is a good idea, but my personal favorite is Goof Off. This stuff kinda smells, but it will cut through that silly putty, no problem. Just let it sit on the putty for about 20 min, and it should come right up. if you have darker color carpet, test the Goof Off first for color fastedness. It might change the color of your carpet.
Hope this helps, and good luck!!

Place an ice cube over the putty to make it hard then you can trim it out if you have a sweater shaver, my Mom had to do this alot when my sisters & I were young!

Try freezing it with ice first. Once it has hardened, chisel it out with a butter knife.

freeze it first and then scrape as much as you can out of the carpet, then follow the instructions in the previous answer.
