1) Weapons and technology: Swords and spears vs. Guns& Missiles. Horses vs. Motorized vehicles and helicopters.
2) Scope: The Mediterranean area plus Westen Europe (Roman Army) vs. The whole world (US Army).
3) Mission: To maintain and expand an empire (Roman) vs. To defend the territories and global interests of a democratic republic (US).
4) Personnel: Almost all of the personnel in the US Army are US citizens. The remainder are permanent residents of the US. Most of the soldiers in the Roman Army were not Romans, just the officers.

There is not very much difference: Us Army Soldiers are pledged to defend and protect the nation against all enemies foreign and domestic! The Romans pledged to their current Ceasar.
The fighting style is modeled after that of the Romans. They also used technological weapons that had not been seen or used before, like Napalm! Rome trained their troops as long as seven years, to make sure they were ready for battle. The Romans also used Rapid Deployment techniques for light armor or special forces troops, to counter calvary units. Our own sigmas are designed after theirs in Latin. You may also note that their armor did not cover the posterior of a soldier. Their Navy was only rivaled later by the Chinese and the Spanish Armada much later in the 1400's. There is a Book : The Roman Legions by Parker that may help you in your research. Good luck...

well - The ROman Army's swore allegeince to their Generals.
That is why for example when Julius C died, the leaders went to war - Brutus and his leagions, Mark Antony and his Legions and then there was Julius C's Nephew (Who history believes was his real son).
They battled each other -
The US Military does not swear allegience to their Generals - so when we change presidents, the generals do not war with their legions to decide who will take the Presidents Seat.

well your biggest difference is going to be the fact that the roman army did not use guns, nor have any access to technology back in that time period
