Just take regular breaks - not leaving your desk. Just look out a window. My optician receommends looking at something really close up then something far away in the distance alternatively to exercise your eyes. It works for me.

You should take brakes from 'staring' at the computer screen to let your eyes rest. Every 50-55 minutes try to stare at a distance and blink more than usual. One of the reasons why the eyes become itchy, is that you get so focused with your computer work, that you actually start blinking less, which dries up the eyes and causes them to itch. Another solution is to use eye-moisturizing drops - those are basically 99% water and 1% salts, but they do help. Make sure, though, that you get MOISTURIZING drops, not brightening (which make eyes appear whiter for a short period, but are actually quite harmful).

What causes this is that you don't blink as often as you need to whilst using a screen. Theoretically your employer should give you breaks away from your screen when you can do other work, and I think this has to be ten mins in every hour, but I could be wrong.
However, we all know that the real world is different from the theoretical one, and I have found that it helps a little to close your eyes and rub an icecube over and around your eyes. (May not do much for your mascara, but your eyes feel better.)

you'll probably find that one of the causes is that you're not blinking enough! True! You get in the habit of staring at the screen and not blinking normally, so you must actually think about blinking more which lubricates the eye.
Also, you get a lot of electrostatic dust around electrical appliances so try to have some fresh air around you, even if it is a small desk fan, to blow a current of air around you. Preferably open a window if you can. This should all help.

Get some 'REFRESH' eye drops for your itchy eyes. This eye drop company does not put anything such as preservatives in the drops, and that is what the doctor had me use after lasic surgery on my eyes. It refreshes, takes away the dryness, and relieves the itch. Try it!

Put used Tea Bags in the fridge and lay them on your eyes for ten minutes or so. That should stop the itching. But do not rub them of you will break the little blood vessels and your eyes will be permanently bloodshot.

Take breaks, and I use individual eye drops that you can just squirt in your eyes quickly whenever you need too call Refresh. Good for contact lenses.

Eye shield, you can buy them at staples or some comp. store. They cover the screen, maybe you've seen them? Also, the flatscreens are easier on the eyes that monitors.
