I have a six month old pitbull labrador mix puppy. Up until yesterday, he was acting fine. All of a sudden, he started getting signs of kennel cough. Is this normal? He hasn't been around too many dogs since I brought him home from the shelter about a week and a half ago. Today, I woke up to give him a walk and feed him, but he wouldn't touch his food or water, it was too cold outside, and he wouldn't do his duties. That's when he started trembling.
All he's been doing for the last two days is sit on the couch and rest. He is doing that as I am writing this. I have even tried giving him his favorite treats but to no avail.
Please, if anybody has any good ideas, they would be greatly appreciated.

I agree, call your vet and tell them you need to have him seen right away. Or call another vet. Puppies can dehydrate very quickly, and I don't want to scare you, but there are other things it could be.

My dog got kennel cough around the same time as yours after brining him home from the shelter. It can take a little while to show symptoms. It can sound like a horrible sickness when they start coughing and hacking. It is like a very bad cold. The worst thing is, is that it will probably seem worse before he gets better even after medication. He is tired because his body is fighting the infection. The not going outside.....if he is a pup he may just not want to get his little butt cold and trembling form the cold. Sometimes they get a little "princess" like as puppies but def mention it to your vet when you go. There isn't a lot you can do other than just let him sleep. Rest is always a good defense even for dogs. Good luck.

Your puppy most likely got it at the shelter. Has he been coughing up mucus? Kennel cough is like a cold or flu for a dog and most likely the vet will give him something to help with the cough but they usually get over it in 2 weeks. If it seems more serious take him to the vet.

Many dogs comming out of a shelter situation have or get kennel cough. It is common and much like a human with a cold.
Keep him warm and be sure he has food and water until you get to the vet.
This is not an emergency and you can wait until you can get into your vet as long as it is soon.
You can try giving some beef or chicken broth to drink so your pet stays hydrated if he has not been drinking. Dilute the broth and let him have a small amount. Keep him warm and comfortable.

Kennel cough usually shows up about 10 days after exposure which he could have been exposed at the shelter while he was there. Until you get him to the vet, make sure that he is getting plenty of fluids. Puppies can dehydrate fast. If he refuses to drink, you can force fluids by using a medicine dropper. Just open his mouth and shoot small amounts in his mouth. But, get him to the vet soon. Also, if you can get a fecal sample, take that in as well.

Wow, he sounds sick! Don't make him go outside for duties, provide paper. A pet supplier should have Dog Litter...keep him warm and offer water frequently. You don't want him to become dehydrated as the problem will be worse! LOL and good luck:) So he gets the idea, put an old piece of feces on the paper or litter.

I agree with the above posters who said that you need to call your vets office back and tell the receptionist that you would like to come in today and that they need to squeeze you in. If they are unwilling to do that, then tell them that you would like the vet to call you after his morning appointments to ask him about they symptoms your dog has.
Keep calling. Make a pest of yourself....the squeeky wheel will get the oil.

The best solution is to get him to the vet so he can start a round of antibiotics. In the meantime, you can try to put him in a room with a vaporizer. Also, if you have other pets, isolate him from them.

Personally I would not wait anymore. I would call the vet and tell them that you are extremely concerned about these symptoms & you want to bring him in now. Hope your doggy feels better soon.

you need to get a walk in appointment. if you suspect he has kennel cough you need to get him there asap!!! he can die from this thing if it advances to far. you can try and give him wet dog for. pedigree puppy is the best. so that way he don't get dehydrated.
