In the context of naming a god, meant you owned the god or the god was disponible to whatever you asked for. The reason why I believe he is named God is because he is not wanting to be known as a disponible God and at our beck and call. That is why when he told Moses "I AM who am", he is stating this very purpose.God does not want to be equated with a Santa Claus epitaph but one on which is abowe all names from a finite point of view.

LOL that is funny. Well to answer your question, I don't think God is a name. It's just a word. Like Goddess. All the different gods in different religions are still "God" even though their name is something else.

Well they had to choose something. You can't be called god and Gary, can you? Of course not, it was one or the other and it's too late to do anything about that now.

God is a generic term used to describe most dieties. Once again, the Christians hijacked the term to mean something just for them, you know, cause their god is better than the others

God is a title, not a name. It's like me changing my name to Engineer - it just muddies the water over whether there are one or many. All my friends can claim there is only one Engineer, me. Others will say, "no, I saw two engineers in the break room", then my friends and those infidels can pop caps in each other's butts. Hey, that sounds kind of fun, I think I'll do that.
Edit: Actually, it occurs to me that I don't need to change my name at all to cause this mayhem. All I have to do is convince my followers that I am the primary engineer (perhaps I can carve some nifty stone tablets or a website to this effect. Oh, I know, direct opt-in e-mail).

God named himself when Abraham I believe asked what he should call him and God told he is the one that cause to become. He is the creator so it is appropriate that he named himself Jehovah, Yaweh if you prefer Hebrew but in English we pronounce it Jehovah he that cause to become and no one else can ever bear that name because he is the original creator and master builder.

God is not so much a name as what we call him... just as I could either call my girlfriend by her actual name or I could call her "Girl" or "Love" or "Darling"... the Christian God has names that define his characteristics like Yahweh and Jehova... it is just like calling God bythe name "Strong" or "Merciful".

Are you fishing for brownie points? I think "GOD" is probably a short form for Great/Grand/Omnipitant/Diety. I have probably spelt Omnipitant wrong, and I don't see my spell check. Where has it gone.

Well the word "god" comes from or is akin to the german word "got". In latin it was Deios from which we get words like deity.
