It is written that not one of Christ's bones were broken during his crucifiction. He was pierced, hung up, and beaten with acrown of thorns on his head while thousands of onlookers mocked him, and cheered on his tormentors. Oh, and by the way, he did all this for you. John 3:16

The soldiers had just broken the legs of the other two that were on a cross at Golgotha and went to Jesus to do the same when they discovered He was already dead. (They stuck the sword in His side and water came out...) The legs were broke to speed up the suffocation process which is how someone died in a crucifixion... slow suffocation.

It was custom at that time to break the legs in order to speed up the death.
When being crucified a person would lift himself up using his legs in order to breathe a little easier.
Jesus, having been stabbed in the side, was already dead when the Roman came to do this.

Bc He was already dead. When someone is crucified, they have to push up on their feet to get a breath (you die by suffocation), eventually you can't push up anymore and die, but since the Jews wanted to take the bodies down before passover, they broke the legs of the two criminals so they couldn't push up and get any more air, so they suffocated. Jesus, however, was already dead, so they didn't break his legs. Pilate ordered his men to make sure He was dead, so they stabbed him through the heart with a spear.

According to what I've been told - the legs of the person on the cross would be broken if the need to speed up the death, or the rate of death was needed.

In other words, some people would not die so easily. In fact, some (because they could "lift" themselves slightly by way of their feet, pressing down) victims would in effect prolong their death by taking the pressure off the lungs which rubbed badly via the ribs and the "hanging" effect.

By breaking their legs, they were unable to lift themselves.

Jesus was dead (he gave up his spirit) when they came to check on his status. To verify his 'death' they punctured his lung, and the water poured out - verifying that the rubbing of the ribs on his lungs had in fact caused irritation which resulted in the victim drowning to death in fluid building in the lungs.

The Romans really knew how to torture!

The bible said the none of Jesus' bones would be broken and because that they saw that he was dead they threw a spear into his side to make sure and that's why they didn't break his legs and the other people were alive so they tortured them

That was a form of added cruelty.

Breaking the legs means he couldn't lift himself (stand slightly) to help himself breath (Crucifixion is a very slow and horrid form of suffocation by exhaustion of the diaphragm).

Not breaking the legs leads to a much longer Crucifixion.

The piercing of his side was an act of compassion, shortening his suffering on the cross.

In order to fulfill the pophesy.
Exo 12:46 "It is to be eaten in a single house; you are not to bring forth any of the flesh outside of the house, nor are you to break any bone of it.

He being the perfect passover lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.

As written in:
John 19:36 For these things came to pass, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, "NOT A BONE OF HIM SHALL BE BROKEN."

Because the guards were certain He was dead.
The purpose of the leg-breaking was so that anyone who had survived the crucifixion could not escape, and would eventually die.
