You can't. At least that's what I was told when I was on a J1 visa.
I was on a J1 visa in 2003 and when it ran out i was gutted, three years later I'm still trying to get back there!
You could switch to another visa type - like the H1B but you will have to find a company who will sponsor you for an H1B visa, and for that you have to have a 4 year degree and work in one of a select few occupations. It depends what country you're from as well.
