It depends on what type of poker you want to play.

For no-limit Texas Hold'em tournaments, the Harringon on Hold'em books are a must-read.

For poker in general, check out Sklansky's Theory of Poker.

For limit hold'em, start with Small Stakes Hold'Em by Miller et al

In my experience, the best books are:

*Super/System (1 or 2)- Great all-around book that addresses a variety of games and teaches a pro's way to play with aggression.

*Harringon on Hold'em Vol. 1-3- These are must-reads for tournament players. Harrington gives great insight on how tournaments affect strategy.

*Sklansky's Theory of Poker- Most people don't include this on their must-read list, but it should be. Sklanksy gives insight into the game beyond "How should you play AKo under the gun." He'll teach you ways to think of the game, and I found this book particularly helpful.

*Mike Caro's Book of Poker Tells- This is a great book if you play live. It will start your thought-process on reading players. If you don't play live, skip it.

Texas holde'em:

Super system - Doyal Brunson
The 3 books by Dan Harrington

Brunsons book is considered the "holy grail" of Texas hold'em. It also covers Omaha, Stud, and some other games.

Harrington's books go from the intermediate to advanced in a no nonsense format. (people friendly)

There are others out there as well. These are the ones I am going after.
