I'm a girl, and I'm in martial arts for the same reason as most of the guys in my class, I want to build confidence, speed, power, flexibilty, power, and the list can continue. I also want to be able to protect myself if anything were to happen to me. This isn't me, but my female instructor began taking self-defence classes after she was raped as a teenager, and that's a logical reason as well.

If you Absolutely had to choose between the two I would lean more towards Shotokan Karate. They tend to have more real life applicable techniques and not fancy theoretical movies. The blocking system is very sound and the strikes powerful as opposed to wing chun which relys on multiple "weaker" punches/kicks to overwhelm opponents. If there were other options available though I would explore those. Gracie Jujitsu is very powerful and techniques can be learned in one day that can be immediately used in real life. Also the sparring which is called "rolling" is pretty safe and technique can be applied at close to full power and you know if you are doing it properly because if not it will not work. Some martial arts tend to give people a false sense of security when they haven't even ever really been tested.

Not just girls, boys also practice these things for self-defense,
but i personally haven't practiced karate before.

Women practice it to defend themselves whenever they're being harrassed or some other cases involving that, thus some women practice almost everday karate and when a moment where they become attacked they dont utilize it, and miss the opportunity due to panic during the attack with the suspect.

But men practice, and then look for trouble to use their karate techniques.

Girls learn self defence and karate to also be ready and to protect themselves in thr eal world. If one comes and decides to attack them on the streets one of these days, they must be able to know how to protect themselves and fight back as well. It is essential they have some type of skills in order to keep their selves from getting hurt or maybe even risking their lives. Thanks and peace be upon you.

Why not? Wold you Rather have your daughter stranded and helpless broke down on the side of the road in a bad neighborhood or would you have peace of mind knowing that she knew self defense and karate and could probably get herself out of a life threatening situation?

Everyone is different, so does the reason why girls learn martial art may slightly differ from one girl to another. But I think that most girls learning martial art for self defense. Well, isn't that sound interesting if you can defense yourself in case of danger? self defense is human instinct.

For me, beside self defense i learn martial art because the movements are sooo beautifull, just like dancing. I fell in love just in the first time i saw it. Another reason is because i look very much pretty in my gi and hakama :D.

Because karate is a girl's sport, while guys usually learn boxing and more practical fighting arts like bjj.

I train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I do it because it's fun and great exercise. Many street fights/attacks end up on the ground, so with the BJJ, I now know how to defend myself against a much bigger person ( I roll with guys who outweigh me by 35 pounds or more), and also how to dislocate an arm or to choke them unconsciouss.

Besides that, it's tons of fun.

I have a 2nd degree black belt in Karate and I've been kickboxing for 8 years now -- 6 of them competitively.

It's great for concentration, exercise, stamina, and self-confidence.
