It looks like you just went to the ATM. I know this kind of thing shouldn't matter but it's for my boss, I'd like to be classy. :)

Should I make the extra effort & go to the bank to get 100's?

ok - here is the simple deal -

When I load money - I personaly dont loan unless I am ok with not getting it back. Even from my employees.

When someone is able to pay me back, and actually do - the fact that they paid it back is HUGE.

I dont worry if it is in 10's, 20's, 50's, 100's.

The important part is that you Kept your promise to pay back. That small thing of paying back shows your boss that you are honorable and trustworthy. Those will go a long way.

Just do you best to never have to borrow from your boss again. It will start to look like you are not able to manage yourself - which in his/her mind will mean you cant manage things for him/her either.

well, I agree that you should pay it back in kind - if you were given hundreds, return hundreds. On the other hand, why does it all have to be the same?
To me, the best way to handle it would be to put it in an envelope and have 2 $100 and the rest in $20s. Doesn't make a big wad and gives him some ready cash if he needs it. Also, doesn't look like you are swimming in hundreds and shows you took the time to make an effort to make his life easier.
Include a note in the envelope thanking your boss for the loan, and you're good to go.

that's the way I would do it and the way I would like to receive it (after I recovered from fainting that someone actually paid me back)

If you feel that $20s are not good enough for him then just run to a bank and exchange them for 3 $100s

What would be tacky is if you repaid them in pennies.

Twenties are just fine.

The thing that should matter is your paying them back and the ATM twenties are good.

Look at it like this, what if they were not going to redeposit them, it is to often hard to get a hundred broken when you have change coming.

No, twenties are far more useful unless the person is planning to deposit the money immediately. There are a lot of places that you spend money that aren't very happy if you give them a hundred dollar bill.

If you want to be considerate, you can put the money in an unsealed envelope to hand to the person, so there's less risk of them losing any of it.

If it is for your boss and you find the bank roll a little too tacky then changing the bill amount to one hundreds isn't really going to improve your etiquette. A personalized cheque would be the way to go to impress your boss with your professionalism.

No, money is money......however, mix the $20.00 denominations up in to $10, $5 and $1.00 bills. Maybe throw in a roll of quarters, he just might give you a well deserved raise.

Heck with looking classy. Paying back the debt is classy to me!

When they lent the money to you, were you given fifties or hundreds? The absolutely correct thing to do in terms of etiquette is to return IN KIND what you received.
Twenties are not bad though. The good part is that you you are actually going to pay it back.

What would be tacky is not paying back the loan.

Classy is paying it back, any denomination will do, submitting payment with a handwritten thank you note.

Your boss won't forget it.

If I were the one receiving the money, I'd rather it be in 20s than 100s. I'd say you're fine.
