The cheapest easiest thing to do is to rinse your mouth out 2-3 every day with warm salty water. One teaspoon per cup is enough. It sounds simple but it works. You may need to see a dentist if it is a bad infection, but I would try this first, if you are not running a fever. Try ibuprofen for the pain. It will also help with the inflammation.

Sounds as though you have got Periodontal disease, an inflammation of the gums which bleed upon brushing and can be very painful, this is due to a build up of Plaque along the gum line, normal brushing at home is effective, but seeing a dentist is more effective as he/she can clean them and get into all the places a regular toothbrush cannot reach!
Rinsing your mouth with a small glass of warm salty water will help relieve any discomfort, and rinsing with Corsodyl mouthwash will be effective-this mouthwash is designed for gum problems.
Carry on brushing as normal, but try investing in a small headed toothbrush with soft bristles.
Try and see a dentist asap, if this is left untreated it will turn into chronic perio disease and this will result in bone loss and the teeth will become lose!

The easiest thing is to go see a dentist. Swollen gums can be just irritated if you eat crunchy foods and scratch them up a bunch. If that's the case cut out the crunchy food(usually chips or cereal like Cap'n Crunch).
However it could be plaque, which a dentist will be able to get rid of for you with a cleaning.
My gums used to be swollen and bleed a bunch when I brushed, I thought this was normal until I went to a dentist. They showed me how the plaque builds under your gum line, and causes stress on it basically. They can clean it out without a problem, and it shouldn't be too horribly expensive. Plus it's good for your heart(somehow arteries and dental hygiene are connected).
Best of luck.

If your gums are red and swollen and bleed this is unhealthy gums. You need to brush and floss daily to help the perio you currently have. Swishing with listerine will help break down the bacteria caused by periodontal disease. Warm salt water rinses will help with the swelling and pain. If your gums bleed when you brush your teeth this means they are unhealthy. Healthy gum tissue will not bleed- they get tough.

Do they bleed with brushing? It sounds like gingivitis. Brush twice a day , floss and use Corsodyl mouthwash which is specially for this problem. Mouthwashes like Listerine are really just for freshening the mouth.

Rinse with Listerine everyday, and get in to that dentist, even if you have to sit in the waiting room for a day and a half.

Gingivitis! (means swelling/inflamed gums)
Treat with fluoride. A dentist or a doctor can prescribe a oral fluoride bath (fluoride mouthwash) for you and you should be better.

Try antiseptic mouth wash. If it doesn't clear up maybe you should visit your doctor for some antibiotics.
