A big down payment that you will get back the next day and you probably won't need identification usually double or triple the room cost for the refundable deposit,
or a working credit card with Identification I would make sure to have two forms of identification

Depends on the class of hotel/motel.
Usually cash money gets you in the door just about any where, unless your trying to make advance reservations, then you will need a credit card and ID.

The word in your question that makes this question harder than first expected is the word "required". In some places, all you need is cash. In most places you need a credit card or debit card with a Visa logo on it, a drivers license and luggage. Thoughtful question!! -k-

In an honest hotel, A gov. issued photo perhaps two. Plus they
get a little nervous if you pay cash. They would rather get plastic.
