Bertrand Russell used this line of attack in his lecture "Why I Am Not a Christian." Here is a good response by Dr. Greg Bahnsen:

Nevertheless, toward the end of his lecture, Russell's discussion turns in the direction of fallaciously arguing against the personal defects of Christians (enforcing narrow rules contrary to human happiness) and the supposed psychological genesis of their beliefs (in emotion and fear). That is, he indulges in the fallacy of arguing ad hominem. Even if what Russell had to say in these matters was fair-minded and accurate (it is not), the fact would remain that Russell has descended to the level of arguing against a truth-claim on the basis of his personal dislike and psychologizing of those who personally profess that claim. In other settings, Russell the philosopher would have been the first to criticize a student for pulling such a thing. It is nothing less than a shameful logical fallacy.

Notice briefly other defects in Russell's line of thinking here. He presumed to know the motivation of a person in becoming a Christian -- even though Russell's epistemology gave him no warrant for thinking he could discern such things (especially easily and at a distance). Moreover, he presumed to know the motivation of a whole class of people (including those who lived long ago), based on a very, very small sampling from his own present experience. These are little more than hasty and unfounded generalizations, telling us (if anything) only about the state of Russell's mind and feelings in his obvious, emotional antipathy to Christians.

In the beginning, religion was used to control people with fear (hell being the obvious here) and over time, it has branched out.

My religion (Wicca) does not practice anything about threat or fear, but more on understanding and knowledge about yourself and the world around you.

And I assume you drive 65 or under out of respect not fear of getting a $100 ticket and paying $500 more a year in insurance premiums until it goes off your record in 3-5 years.

YOu know if the man comes in and finds too much Pot in your house you do 3-5 in the big house. Does that scare you.

Does it scare you when the IRS audits you.

Does it scare you when someone serves you with a summons to court.

No Religion is built on threats and fear. Read the book: "When Religion Becomes Evil" by Charles Kimball.

Every religion at its center is to "love one another," and "love your neighbor as yourself."

the root of hate and fear are ignorance religion is an encomapssing word for all faiths beleifs just like Protestant Catholic Muslim Baptist Methodist etc etc are labels for different relgious beleifs My Faith is based on JESUS the Son of the Living God! But i respect all persons and their beliefs even if we disagree. God created each of us for an intimate loving relationship with HIM and our communication is prayer scripture and the totally surrendered will to God! Threats fear promises of riches fullfillment of every carnal thought appetite is not about JESUS or God's love its man's /woman's human nature seeking the forbidden fruit always falls short of the expected result but u have to experience the damascus road to understand it

It's about fear of the unknown and explaining things that can't be completely understood. It feeds on weaker people. Religion sucks.

Actually no not at all. My religion has no Hell and makes no sweeping announcements about what happens after we die. It is mostly about living a good life.
