I adopted my kitty just over 2 months ago from my local animal shelter. He used to be a stray, so he's used to being outside. I live in a small one-bedroom apartment and going outside is really not an option for him.

The weather has been much nicer lately and I think he's got a bit of cabin fever. He is prone to walking around the apartment meowing and only stops when I pet him, but I can't pet him 24 hours a day!

He has lots of fun toys to play with, but I'm looking for suggestions for other tactics I might try to get him used to his new indoor lifestyle?

I have a perch set up for him and he pretty much sits there all day. I think watching the birds and such and seeing how bright it is outside makes him want to go out more!

Unfortunately we don't have screens in our windows (how stupid is that?!) so I can't really open them.

Yep, he had just been neutered when I got him.

I don't really have an outside area where he could go...there aren't any railings or anything, unfortunately.

Morgan, that's a great idea! I had thought about trying that. Thanks!

Also, I do give him heartworn/flea medicine once a month.

He had been adjusting really well before the weather got nice. He's generally a very happy cat and he likes to snuggle, but he does miss the outdoors.

It sounds like he's thankful for having a new home. Remember, cats sleep up to 16 hours a day.

One trick with cat toys is not to give him access to all of them at one time. If you cycle them, he will be amused by the toys and they will spark his interest more than if he had all of them at his disposal.

Give him time and play with him a lot, he will come around eventually. Hopefully he will realize that he has it just as good inside. I have two cats, and their most favorite activity is to sit on the window ledge and look outside, they can sit there for hours, and they have always been indoor cats. I think the birds and cars and things moving around are just really entertaining for kitties, whether they are used to going outside or not.

Get one of those perches that attaches to a window so he can sit on it and look outside. Also - if you have good windows and screens open a window and let him sit on the windowsill to get the fresh air and look outside.
I had a street cat turned indoor cat and this worked for me - he loves to sit in the window all day and watch the birds etc.

In my experiences (all but one of my cats has been a stray turned indoor only cat), your kitty will adjust. If he has a great window to look out of, lots of love, toys and food, he'll be happy. I had one that took a while to adjust, others that took to it like instantly (guess they realized the good life when it was presented to them, lol). Keep doing what you're doing and he will soon forget the outside world and will love his new home.

Good luck to you both.

you're doing the right issue by ability of rescuing this unfavourable kitty and having him neutered. No problem bringing him interior. at the same time as he receives back from the vets, isolate him in a small room with foodstuff, water and a muddle field for an afternoon or so. After that, he will start up to inspect and develop into acquainted including your position. do basically not enable him bypass outdoors. he receives used to it and he will stay a healthful existence. sturdy success.

Have you tried getting a leash and harness? My cat loves going on little walks. This way he gets to eat grass, play around the garden, and just lay on the ground. He really enjoys it, and always comes running when he hears the leash.
This may help with your kitties cabin fever. Though, I do recommend that you use an anti-flea medication so kitty doesn't bring fleas in with him.
Good luck to you and your kitty, and thanks for adopting a shelter cat!

do you have a side deck or walk out area with(or with out) rails? If so get some wood(get permission first ok) netting(the good kind they cant chew through)and block off the open area to creat a safe place for him. Lots of people have done this who live in apts, like you. ancor the wood down to the ground and staple or nail the netting all th way around to creat a safe enclosure.

You don't mention whether or not he's been neutered. Neutering and time will make him more content to be inside although his curiosity at what's on the other side of the window won't diminish completely.

Well maybe even though you love him he is not the right pet for you. Yes a proch thing would help but remember hat he is wild and will miss the outdoors alot. I think that you might want to find another loving home that will let him outdoors. Maybe you can make it work but sadly maybe not. Hope everything works out!
