I would opt for a Canon lens...but there are some great third party lenses out there too! If you are looking for a good basic lens, I'd choose something like Canon's 17-85mm f 4-5.6 lens.

This would give you moderate wide angle to medium short telephoto.

i assume that you want 1 lens only, and you might want something starting from wide side (20mm range) and go above 50mm at least, so these are my recommendations:

(1) canon EF-S 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM (approx. usd$1000)
(2) canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM (approx. usd$450)
(3) canon 28-135mm IS USM (approx. usd$400)

i tried all three of these, they all worth the price and very good as a general purpose lens, especially #1, it's build and quality is almost perfect.

Canon 28-135mm IS. It is the good lens.
