How fast do the cars in NASCAR go?

Question

Do they drive flat out round the corners.
Whats the 0-60 time.
Do any drivers dominate or is it very close at the top.

In race trim they run about 191 tops at the fastest tracks. Whenever speed approach 200 the officials step in and find a way to slow them down. Last year at Talledaga the speed during practice were topping 198 so Nascar changed the restictor plates and brought them back down to 191. It is a misconseption that stock cars are out there lapping at 200 mph. You hear people say it all the time. But they don't. Compare that the Gil De Ferrin turning in a 241 in a Toyota powered Champ Car at Fontana or Sam Hornish Jr. AVERAGING 207 for a whole race in a Chevy powered IRL car also at Fontana. And as to your first question yes they do run flat out in the corners at the long tracks but not at the short one. That is why the short tracts are more interesting to me any way.

It depends tracks like Martinsville which is the slowest track cars will drop to close to 60 mph and probably close in on the
130 mph mark. Atlanta is the fastest track, but tracks like California and Michigan you see the speeds close in on 208ish going into the turns. Daytona and Talledega are around 190mph. Nascar is continually trying to slow the cars down because if they didn't place restrictions on the cars god knows how fast they are capable of.

As for your second question there is a select group and drivers you usually find battling it out for wins, which is a decent amount of drivers.

0-60 times are probably pretty hard to get - 850hp, 3400lb car probably pretty decent though

The type of track makes a hugh difference too. At Talladega and Daytona they not only run restrictor plates but they also run rear gears designed for top speed. At Martinsville they will run a gear designed to get up to speed quickly, much like a drag car. With 800+ HP and torque in the 700+ range, that car will get up and MOVE with the right setup.
Also keep in mind that suspension setups on one of the cars is designed for an oval track. A road course car will be set up to be as even as possible. A drag car or car designed to get the best acceleration possible will be set up so that all of the weight transfer is going to the rear tires. An 800 horse drag car will carry the front wheels off the ground even at 3200 lbs. A Cup car is designed to keep all 4 wheels on the ground for maximum traction.
As for dominating drivers, it seems that every year somebody new is winning the most races for the season yet not winning the championship. I would say that there are at least 12-15 drivers that can win on any weekend.

It all depends on the track and if the car has a restrictor plate on the carburetor or not. Tracks like Charlotte, Las Vegas, Texas and Atlanta the cars usually hit the high 190's to low 200's. At Daytona and Talladega they run restrictor plates to slow the cars down. There too they hit the high 190's to low 200's. If not for the restrictor plates they would run much faster. Two years ago a Rusty Wallace ran a lap at Talladega w/o a restrictor plate and averaged 228 mph over that lap. So during race conditions the care would probably run in the 230's if not for the restrictor plate

NASCAR wants to keep them below 200mph so they wont go airborne and fly into the stands. if it was up to the teams i am sure they would want to go as fast as it takes to win.
yet i suppose 200 mph is the benchmark. these cars are not designed to go 0-60 mph. the pace car is 55-60 mph, so therefore on restarts it is important from there to top speed.

Rusty went 228 at Dega with no restricter plate, and the Evenham number 9 car went 223 at the landing strip at Kennedy Space Center about five weeks ago doing some areo test on the COT.

On average around 175 to 200 MPH during a race, I've seen some time trial lap times as high as 220 or there about. They measure performance by lap time not 0-60.
