The best way to counter a hook is by throwing an uppercut. The best way to counter a straight is through the hook.

I found when I was boxing the best counter for a hook was another hook. When a person misses with the hook they are generally of balance and with a counter hook they are with in your range of a hook or an uppercut two devastating counter shots. Now the other way around the best counter for a jab would be the right hand coming straight over the jab or a left hook to the mid section or up to the head. Two fighter use to use it quite effectively Smoking Joe and Mike Tyson. Then again you got Oscar who also counters well with the hooks. There is one other variable it a person ability to time his opponent.

Yes, but i wouldnt say vice versa...because the quickest way from point a to point b is a straight line...so when he is throwing a wide looping punch, your straight punch will hit him first and stop him in his tracks. If you try throwing a lead looping punch, expect to get tagged in the face...you must set up a hook with a straight right first, that way he isnt ready to slip your hook.

I always thought a right cross or a right to the mid-section was a good counter to a left hook if it missed. there is nothing wrong with a short uppercut on the vice versa as well.

I think it depends on the opening and the flow of the fight. I try to roll under the hook and come back with either and uppercut or a straight right. However I may come back with a hook also depending on how his hands and my angle is positioned. I don't really belief in set formulas to much.

A stiff upercut will have a more effective head-jarring effect but is much harder to execute.

Well connected hook can have the greatest effect in most cases, but again requires great timing for maximum effect and can leave the fighter somewhat exposed on one side.
