how soon should he get the shots (at how mant weeks?)? are there things vets try & talk you into that you don't need? I want to get him all he needs to stay healthy but i'm sure some vets "recommend" things that aren't "must haves".

Vets recommend things that your pets need because they feel that they need them.

AGE OF PUPPY: VACCINATION / PROCEDURE

6 - 8 weeks First examination, first (of 3) DHLPP vaccination. This is the distemper multiple 5 in 1 vaccine. It protects against Canine Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus. Bring a stool sample so they may check for intestinal parasites.

9 - 12 weeks Second DHLPP booster and exam. This is done 3-4 weeks after the first vaccine. A second fecal exam should be performed.

12 + weeks Rabies vaccination. This first rabies vaccine is good for 1 year; subsequent vaccinations last for 3 years.

13 - 16 weeks Third (and final) DHLPP booster and exam. This is done 3-4 weeks after the second booster. This vaccine will last for 1 year and will then need to be boostered annually. This booster concludes the series of routine puppy vaccinations. If a puppy starts the series at an early age, 4 vaccines may be needed; if it starts at a later age, only 2 vaccines may be needed in the series.

Go with a vet you TRUST 100% and If you trust your vet, you won't feel that he's trying to screw you over. Make sure you feel comfortable with him and your pet will too.

Good luck with your pup.

Here is the AAHA/AVMA protocol for vaccinations (also the one used/taught at all 27 vet schools):

8-9 weeks of age distemper/parvo/adenovirus-2/canine hepatitis

12 - 14 weeks same as above

16- 18 weeks repeat above

20 weeks or older rabies

A year from the date of last vacciantions a booster is due then no more for 3 years. Distemper/parvo vacciantions are NO longer done annually after the one year booster. (unfortunately in some states they require rabies yearly)

Lepto, parainfluenza, kennel cough (bordatella) and lymes are NOT needed nor recommended for all dogs. These vacciantions should only be given to dogs that will be at high risk of exposure. Toy breeds/mixes can be particularly sensative to these vaccines.

Coronavirus, giardia, adenovirus-1 and the dental vaccination should NOT be given to any dog!! Steer away from vets that try to give your dog/puppy these vacciantions. They are NOT following the protocol they were given.
Make sure to know what is in your vaccine before it is given to your dog.

All vets in the US have been informed of the protocol and informed of all the problems surrounding over vacciantion. They have been given all of the studies over the years. Unfortunately there are those vets that for whatever reason refuse to follow the AAHA/AVMA and drug company protocol so be careful in selecting a vet.
Puppies should NOT have ANY vaccinations before they have completed their 7th week!! Vaccinating earlier then this can interfer with natural immunity, suppress immune system and make the puppy more suseptible to the very illness the vaccine is suppose to help protect against. It also can cause future problems with adverse reactions to vaccines.

For more vaccine info go to the AAHA site or to Dr. Jean Dodds or Dr. Ron Schultz site or get a copy of the November 2006 issue of the Whole Dog Journal it has a wonderful easy to understand article on vaccinations.

Your puppy should also have already been dewormed at 2, 4, 6 & 8 weeks of age and should be done periodically from now on. He also should get a good exam each time he gets his vaccinations even though the series is done every 4 weeks until the series of 3 is done.

Well, hopefully that pup is no younger than 8 weeks...If he is younger take him back to the mother till he is 8 weeks....Also, your pup should have already has his first set of shots...That is where you ask whoever you got him from...His next set of shots would be due at 12 weeks...That is when you take him to the vet for those shots...Then they will tell you when the next set is...And so on...
